Cash App Text-Message Settlement: $12.5 Million, $394.36 per Claim, Claims Closed
Payments Going Out Now
People searching for a “Cash App TCPA settlement” almost always mean one case: Bottoms v. Block, Inc., over Cash App “Invite Friends” referral texts. It was not a federal TCPA case — it was brought under a Washington state anti-spam law, and only Washington residents were covered. Block paid $12.5 million, the court gave final approval on December 2, 2025, and accepted claims were paid $394.36. The claim deadline was October 27, 2025; nothing new can be filed.

What the Lawsuit Said Happened
Cash App's “Invite Friends” button let a user pick phone contacts and send them a pre-written text with a personal referral code, in exchange for a referral bonus. The lawsuit alleges that Block, Cash App's parent company, substantially assisted its users in sending unsolicited commercial texts to Washington residents who had never agreed to receive them.
The claims were under Washington's Commercial Electronic Mail Act (CEMA) and Consumer Protection Act. CEMA allows $500 per text sent in violation of the law, which the plaintiff argued could be tripled. According to a plaintiff's declaration, the Invite Friends texts reached about 1,975,187 unique phone numbers with Washington area codes.
Block denied wrongdoing, said it did not “initiate or assist” in sending the texts, and settled without admitting liability.
Case details
Bottoms v. Block, Inc., No. 2:23-cv-01969-MJP, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. It was filed on November 21, 2023 in King County Superior Court (No. 23-2-22406-0 SEA) and removed to federal court on December 21, 2023. Judge Marsha J. Pechman granted preliminary approval; Judge John Chun was assigned the case in September 2025 and granted final approval. Washington's attorney general intervened in December 2024 to defend the law's constitutionality, which Block had questioned. Official site: BottomsTextSettlement.com.
Status: Approved, Paid, Closed to New Claims
Claims, opt-outs and objections were all due October 27, 2025. That deadline has passed; there is no late-claim window. The official site’s latest update we could find (April 1, 2026) mentions no second distribution — the settlement says leftover uncashed money goes to a pro rata second round if worthwhile, and/or to the Legal Foundation of Washington.
The Cash App settlement that is in the news this month is a different one: the data-security settlement began paying approved claims on October 7, 2026 (see below).
Who Was in the Class
You were a class member if all three applied: you received a Cash App referral text between November 14, 2019 and August 7, 2025; you lived in Washington when you got it; and you had not clearly agreed in advance to receive it. Living in another state, or having a Washington number but not living there, did not qualify.
A referral text looked like this: “Try it using my code and you'll get $5,” followed by a code and a cash.app link. Referral texts never said someone had sent or requested money.
Being in the class was not enough to get paid: class members who did nothing received no payment and still gave up the right to sue over these texts.
What the Settlement Paid
Before the deadline, the notice estimated $88 to $147 per person, assuming no more than 5% of the class would claim. Fewer claims came in, and the final award was $394.36 per accepted claim, paid by the method chosen on the claim form (paper check, Venmo, PayPal and others).
If you filed by October 27, 2025 and never got paid, contact the administrator at info@BottomsTextSettlement.com or 1-877-540-7545. If you did not file, no payment is coming.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 118,291 other personal injury casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2026, 3.9% of them filed as class actions:
- 39.6% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 14% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 39.6% and 53.6%.
- 5.7% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 109 reached a trial (0.9%), after a median of 23.9 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 9 months.
- Only 802 of them (0.7%) record a money award at all; the median of those is $537,500.

May 2, 2024 — Motion to Dismiss Denied
The court rejected Block's motion. It also refused to use the federal TCPA as the test, because the TCPA does not cover assisting with a text and CEMA does.

The administrator reported all failed payments reissued as paper checks at $394.36 per accepted claim, most expected by April 8, 2026.
Three Things to Watch For
A closed settlement with a known payment amount is easy to imitate:
“Claim your $394.36 Cash App payment” texts
The claim period ended October 27, 2025. Any message inviting you to file now, or to “confirm” your $Cashtag or card number to release the money, is not from the settlement.
Fees to “reissue” your check
Reissues were handled for free through info@BottomsTextSettlement.com and 1-877-540-7545. No administrator charges a processing fee or asks you to send money through Cash App to receive a payment.
Mixing up the Cash App settlements
Sites and videos blend the text case, the data-security case and regulator orders into one “Cash App settlement.” Each has its own official site and its own class; a claim in one does nothing for another.
Cash App Text Settlement — Questions People Actually Ask
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.
Is there a Cash App TCPA class action settlement?
Not under the federal TCPA. The cash app tcpa class action settlement people are looking for is Bottoms v. Block, Inc., which was brought under Washington's Commercial Electronic Mail Act. The court found the TCPA did not apply because it does not impose liability for assisting with a text message. The case settled for $12.5 million.
How do I know if I’m part of the Cash App settlement?
For the text settlement: you received a Cash App referral text between November 14, 2019 and August 7, 2025, lived in Washington at the time, and had not agreed to it in advance. You also had to file a claim by October 27, 2025 to be paid. For the data-security settlement, see our check-status guide.
How much will I get from the Cash App settlement?
The text settlement paid $394.36 per accepted claim, per the official site. The earlier $88 to $147 figure was only a pre-deadline estimate. The data-security settlement pays different amounts; our Cash App settlement calculator covers it.
How do I claim the Cash App settlement?
You can no longer claim in either class settlement. The text settlement deadline was October 27, 2025. The data-security settlement (Salinas v. Block, No. 22-cv-04823, N.D. Cal.) closed to claims on November 18, 2024; it began paying approved claims on October 7, 2026.
Who qualifies for the Cash App lawsuit?
It depends which one. The text case covered only Washington residents who got Invite Friends referral texts. The security case covered users affected by data incidents disclosed in April 2022 and October 2023 and by alleged unauthorized transfers. Our breakdown of the four Cash App settlements separates them.
I filed a text claim but never got paid. What now?
Email info@BottomsTextSettlement.com or call 1-877-540-7545 with your claim details. In its April 1, 2026 update, the administrator said all failed payments and returned checks had been reissued as paper checks and that most would be delivered by April 8, 2026. Do not contact the court; the notice asks people not to contact Judge Chun.
I did not live in Washington. Can I still do something about referral texts?
This settlement does not help you; it was limited to Washington residents. Washington's law specifically covers anyone who “assists” in sending a text, which other laws may not. A licensed attorney in your state can say whether any claim exists. Similar text-message suits have been filed against other apps, such as the Chick-fil-A app case.
Is a letter or email about the Cash App text settlement real?
Real notices came from the administrator before the October 27, 2025 deadline and pointed to BottomsTextSettlement.com. Today the only legitimate contact would be about a payment you already claimed. Anything asking for a fee, your Cash App PIN or a new claim is not real.
