Anthem BCBS Settlement: Your Payment Comes From the $2.67 Billion Blue Cross Case
If a card, a check or an email arrived with "Anthem" or "Blue Cross Blue Shield" on it, you are looking at the antitrust settlement — not a new case, and not a scam by default. Here is what it is, why it is landing now, and what you can and cannot still do.
Short answer, before anything else
People search for "Anthem BCBS settlement" because Anthem is the name on the insurance card — but there is no standalone Anthem settlement behind the payments going out in 2026. Anthem-branded plans are Blue Cross Blue Shield licensees, and they are part of the same nationwide case: In re: Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation, MDL 2406, in the Northern District of Alabama (Master File No. 2:13-cv-20000-RDP).
That single fact resolves most of the confusion. You are not missing a separate Anthem claim process. If you filed a claim before the deadline, your payment comes through the Blue Cross Blue Shield subscribers settlement — and its administrator started sending the initial distribution on May 11, 2026.
Why money is showing up now
The settlement itself is years old; the paying is recent. Per the court-authorized website, "the initial distribution of payments to Damages Class Members with valid claims will be sent starting May 11, 2026." The administrator also states plainly that it cannot tell any individual the exact date their own payment goes out.
Two payment routes exist, and they behave differently — which is why two people in the same household can have very different experiences:
- Prepaid card. Class members who chose this receive an email from distribution@BCBSsettlement.com with a redemption code. The official redemption site is settlementpayment.choicepaymenthub.com — activate by choosing "Activate My Card", then "Enter activation code instead".
- Paper check. Mailed to the address the administrator has on file. Mailing millions of items is not instantaneous, so an empty mailbox while a neighbour already got paid is normal, not a red flag.
You can look up your own status directly at secure.bcbssettlement.com/claimstatus if you have your Claim Number or Unique ID.
How much is it? The honest version
The administrator has not published a per-person average. Anyone quoting an exact figure as official is guessing. What is documented is the mechanism: shares are pro rata, weighted by the Blue Cross premiums paid during the 2008–2020 class period. Longer coverage and higher premiums mean a larger share.
The widely circulated "about $333" figure is press arithmetic, not an administrator statement: roughly 5.7 million validated claims dividing a net fund of roughly $1.9 billion. Treat it as an order of magnitude, not a promise. Individual amounts documented by class members range widely in both directions, and the first round holds back a portion for a second distribution.
You cannot file now — and that is not a technicality
This is the part that disappoints people, so it is worth stating without hedging. The Claims Filing Deadline for the Damages Class was November 5, 2021 (postmarked or submitted online). The official Key Dates page lists it as passed, along with the fairness hearing on October 20–21, 2021.
There is no late-claim window, no appeal for missing it, and no service that can file for you now. If you did not submit a claim by that date, you are not receiving a payment from this distribution — and any website offering to "still get you in" is, at best, selling nothing.
One exception worth knowing: the healthcare provider side is a separate settlement with its own website and its own timeline. That one is for hospitals, physicians and other providers, not for individual subscribers.
Is the notice real? How to check in under a minute
Unexpected money is exactly the shape a scam takes, so the caution is healthy. The verification is simple, though — check the destination, not the wording.
- Court-authorized site: bcbssettlement.com. Claim status lives on secure.bcbssettlement.com. Card redemption happens on settlementpayment.choicepaymenthub.com. Nothing else is official.

- Disqualifying signs: any request for a fee to release your payment, any request for online banking credentials or a full Social Security number by email, and any domain that merely resembles the official one. A real administrator charges you nothing.
If a message fails any of those tests, do not reply to it — go to the official site directly and use the claim-status lookup instead.
