Honda Odyssey Class Action Lawsuit: Three 2026 Cases, No Settlement Yet

Active Litigation

Get a free case reviewCase status

If you searched “honda odyssey class action”, you are most likely seeing one of three proposed class actions filed in California federal courts in May and June 2026: one over side airbags that can fire without a crash (2018–2022 Odysseys, tied to a 440,830-vehicle recall), one over a starting system that can leave the van dead at a light (2018–2025), and one over the front camera that runs Honda Sensing (2018–2025). As of October 2026 none has a settlement, a fund, a claim form or a deadline. The older oil-burning settlement for 2008–2013 Odysseys closed in 2014.

What Each Honda Odyssey Lawsuit Alleges

Side airbags (2018–2022). The lawsuit alleges the side curtain and side thorax airbags can deploy with no collision, and that Honda knew since at least May 2019. Honda’s own recall filing says the airbag control unit “contains incorrect deployment parameters” that may trigger the bags over potholes, speed bumps or road debris. The complaint says dealers refused to cover repairs costing $3,000 to $11,000 and argues the recall may not fully fix the vans.

Starting system (2018–2025). The 132-page complaint alleges the batteries never fully charge in normal driving, so the engine can shut off during an idle stop or fail to restart after parking. It says Honda gave other models a replacement starter and a 10-year warranty extension under service bulletins starting January 2023, while 2018–2023 Odysseys got only a software update.

Front camera (2018–2025). The 46-page complaint alleges a front camera flaw can knock out every camera-based Honda Sensing feature at once — collision mitigation, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise — across the Odyssey, HR-V, Clarity, Civic and Pilot. Honda has not conceded any of these claims.

Case details

Airbags: Carr v. Honda Motor Company, Ltd., No. 5:26-cv-04431, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, filed May 13, 2026, assigned to Judge Edward John Davila. Defendants include American Honda Motor Company, Inc. and Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC.

Starting system: Bodney v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., No. 2:26-cv-05939, Central District of California, filed June 2, 2026.

Front camera: Jones v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., No. 2:26-cv-06222, Central District of California, filed June 8, 2026. The three cases are separate; they have not been consolidated.

Older, closed: Soto v. American Honda Motor Co., No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI, Northern District of California, Judge Susan Illston — the VCM oil-consumption settlement, finally approved March 21, 2014.

Status: Three Open Cases, No Settlement

All three 2026 cases are pending, early-stage proposed class actions. As of October 2026 the court records show none of them has been dismissed or settled, and no class has been certified. There is no settlement, no fund, no administrator, no claim form and no deadline in any Honda Odyssey class action today.

What is live is the airbag recall, NHTSA No. 26V227, filed April 9, 2026. It is separate from the lawsuit and costs nothing: owners are contacted by mail and a Honda dealer reprograms or replaces the airbag control unit. You do not have to wait for the lawsuit to get that repair. For every other Honda case, see our Honda lawsuit overview.

There's no claim deadline yet. We'll email you when the case moves forward, like a settlement or payments going out.

Which Odyssey Owners Are in the Proposed Classes

Airbag case: owners and lessees of 2018–2022 Odysseys bought or leased from May 25, 2017, with state classes in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Starting-system case: all current and former owners or lessees of a 2018–2025 Odyssey bought or leased in the U.S.

Front-camera case: buyers and lessees of 2018–2025 Odyssey, HR-V, Clarity, Civic or Pilot vehicles in the U.S.

You do not sign up for any of these. If a class is certified or a deal is reached, a court-appointed administrator notifies class members. What helps you later is paperwork: keep repair invoices for airbag, battery, starter or camera work, towing receipts, and any recall letter.

Is There Money Yet?

No. Nothing is payable in any Honda Odyssey class action as of October 2026: no settlement, no fund, no claim form. No court has valued these claims, and early-stage defect suits can be dismissed, narrowed or settled years later.

For context only: when Honda settled the last big Odyssey engine case, Soto, the main benefit was an extended powertrain warranty — eight years from purchase with no mileage limit — plus reimbursement for owners who filed a claim with repair receipts. That is the typical shape of a vehicle-defect deal: repair coverage and refunds of documented costs, not a large cash check. Keep your receipts.

Honda Odyssey Lawsuit Timeline

  1. March 21, 2014 — Oil-Burning Settlement Approved

Judge Susan Illston grants final approval in Soto, covering 2008–2013 Odysseys with VCM V6 engines. Claims closed April 10, 2014.

  2. October 28, 2025 — NHTSA Opens Airbag Probe

NHTSA opens Preliminary Evaluation PE25-018 into side airbags deploying in 441,002 2018–2022 Odysseys.

  3. April 9, 2026 — Recall 26V227

Honda recalls 440,830 Odysseys. Its recall filing listed 130 warranty claims and 25 injury reports through April 2, 2026.

  4. May 13, 2026 — Airbag Class Action Filed

Carr v. Honda Motor Company, Ltd. is filed in the Northern District of California, alleging that the side airbag recall may not be good enough.

  5. June 2 and June 8, 2026 — Starter and Camera Suits

Bodney (starting system) and Jones (front camera) are filed in the Central District of California.

  6. October 2026 — All Pending, No Settlement

As of October 2026 all three cases are pending. NHTSA closed its probe on June 25, 2026 in view of the recall.

Three Things to Watch For

A recall letter and three lawsuits in the news at once give scammers plenty to work with:

“Claim your Honda Odyssey settlement” pages

There is no Odyssey settlement in 2026 and no claims site. A form asking for your VIN, driver’s license or bank details to “reserve your payment” is collecting data, not filing a claim.

Recall calls that ask for money

The airbag recall repair is free at a Honda dealer. Anyone who phones about recall 26V227 and wants a card number, a “scheduling fee” or a deposit is not Honda. Check your VIN yourself at NHTSA.gov.

“Sign now or lose your share”

Ads urging you to sign a retainer before a deadline are inventing urgency — no deadline exists. In a Rule 23 class you are included automatically if a class is certified; read any agreement before signing.

Honda Odyssey Class Action — Questions People Ask

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.

Is there a Honda Odyssey class action lawsuit right now?

Yes, three proposed class actions filed in 2026: Carr (side airbags, 2018–2022, N.D. Cal. No. 5:26-cv-04431), Bodney (starting system, 2018–2025, C.D. Cal. No. 2:26-cv-05939) and Jones (front camera, 2018–2025, C.D. Cal. No. 2:26-cv-06222). As of October 2026 all are pending.

Is there a settlement, claim form or deadline?

No. None of the 2026 cases has settled, so there is no fund, no administrator, no claim form and no deadline. If that changes, class members are notified directly.

How much money will I get from a class action lawsuit?

From these cases, nothing yet — there is no settlement. Vehicle-defect settlements usually pay through extended warranties and reimbursement of documented repair costs, so receipts matter more than anything else. Our payout calculator shows how per-person amounts typically work.

What are the current Honda recalls for the Odyssey?

The one tied to the lawsuits is NHTSA recall 26V227 (April 9, 2026): 440,830 2018–2022 Odysseys whose side airbags may deploy over potholes or speed bumps. The dealer reprograms or replaces the airbag control unit for free. Enter your VIN at NHTSA.gov to see every open recall on your van.

Is there a class action lawsuit on Honda Odyssey piston rings?

Not in 2026. People searching for a “class action lawsuit Honda Odyssey piston rings” usually mean Soto v. American Honda Motor Co. (No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI), which alleged VCM V6 engines in 2008–2013 Odysseys burned oil and misfired. It settled with an extended warranty of eight years from purchase and repair reimbursement; claims closed April 10, 2014, so that warranty has now run out for every covered van.

What is the transmission lawsuit on the 2018 Honda Odyssey?

The three 2026 cases do not concern the transmission, and we could not verify the current status of any Odyssey transmission case from a primary source, so this page does not cover it. For a transmission fault today, check open recalls and service bulletins for your VIN at NHTSA.gov and ask a Honda dealer about warranty coverage.

My Odyssey airbag deployed by itself. What should I do?

Get the recall done if it has not been, keep the repair invoice and any injury records, and report the event to NHTSA. Honda’s April 2026 recall filing listed 25 injury reports. Keeping documentation preserves your position whether or not the class action pays anything.

Do I need to join the lawsuit to be included?

No. Proposed class members are included automatically if a class is certified, unless they opt out by a deadline in an official notice. No such notice exists as of October 2026.
