Class counsel put the first payment at about $2,203.56 per work. It goes out only for works where the co-owners agree on the split and have supplied their payment details.

What Decides Whether You Are in the First Round
The settlement pays per work, not per person, and the per-work amount is then divided among that book’s rightsholders — for example an author and a publisher — under a default split or a percentage split chosen during the claims process. Between September 2–4, 2026 the administrator, JND Legal Administration, emailed every claimant a claim information notice with a Claim Number and PIN, then mailed notices to people without a valid email.
Two conditions put a work into the first distribution: the claimants on it do not disagree about the allocation (or settle it quickly), and they have provided all the payment information the administrator needs. Works still in dispute are left out of the first round. Their money is held in reserve in the escrow account and paid in a later distribution.
Case details
Bartz v. Anthropic PBC, Case No. 4:24-cv-05417-AMO, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, before Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín. Final approval and judgment were entered on July 20, 2026 (Dkt. 680). Class counsel’s status report of September 2, 2026 (Dkt. 688) sets out the payout math, and on September 15, 2026 the court approved the website update that announces the November 15 target (Dkt. 692).
Two notices of appeal reached the Ninth Circuit in August 2026 (Nos. 26-5391 and 26-5455). Both were filed by law firms left out of the fee award, and class counsel told the court that both concern the fee award only. On that basis the parties agree the settlement’s Effective Date has passed, “assuming that no late-filed appeal is permitted to go forward.” Class counsel also told the court that no class member or objector filed a timely appeal.
Status: Approved, Claims Closed, First Payments Pending
The claim deadline was March 30, 2026 and has passed. Payments go out by the method you chose on your claim form. If you picked a check and have moved, tell the administrator your new address now.
If your work is disputed: the site asks co-claimants to send supporting information within 60 days of getting access to the consolidated claim information. That window is not a cutoff. Disputes go through talks run by the administrator and, if there is still no agreement, the court-appointed Special Master, whose decisions are final and binding with no right of appeal. You are paid once the dispute is resolved.
Who Gets Paid in November
Only people who filed a valid claim before the deadline, which passed on March 30, 2026. According to class counsel the final count is 449,731 claimed works. The administrator has received some late-claim requests, and class counsel said it would submit them for the court’s review.
The practical test is your September notice. If you received a claim information notice for a valid, timely claim, log in to the portal with its Claim Number and PIN, check the shares listed for each of your works, and confirm your payment details. If your co-owners all agree and your details are complete, your work is meant to be in the first round.
How Much: About $2,203.56 Per Work in the First Payment
• About $1,083,000,000 is expected in the account by mid-November, including interest.
• Deducted first: 70% of the court’s $101,561,111 fee award (nearly 6.8% of the fund), with 10 percent of that held back; $2,635,197.46 in expenses; $45,000 in service awards; and an $18,220,000 cost reserve.
• That leaves about $991,007,024.84 to divide among 449,731 works, or $2,203.56 per work, subject to change for interest and any accepted late claims.
That amount is per work, before it is split among co-owners. Anthropic’s last installment, $450 million plus interest, is due on the earlier of September 25, 2027 or 30 days after a qualifying funding event for Anthropic. That money is not part of the first payment. As of October 19, 2026, no date has been published for a later distribution.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 60,409 federal civil cases of this typeclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2026:
- 19.7% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 57.6% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 19.7% and 77.3%.
- 2.1% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 313 reached a trial (0.3%), after a median of 29.4 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 4.3 months.
- Only 2,101 of them (3.5%) record a money award at all; the median of those is $38,000.

Anthropic Settlement Payout Timeline
July 20, 2026 — Final Approval and Judgment
Judge Martínez-Olguín grants final approval, awards $101,561,111 in fees and enters judgment (Dkt. 680).
August 2026 — Fee-Only Appeals
Two law firms excluded from the fee award appeal to the Ninth Circuit (26-5391, 26-5455). The parties say both concern the fee award only. Anthropic’s $450 million Scheduled Payment 1 is paid on August 19, 2026.
September 2, 2026 — Payout Math Filed
Class counsel’s status report (Dkt. 688) projects about $2,203.56 per work and payments no later than November 15, 2026.

JND emails claimants their consolidated claim information with a Claim Number and PIN. Mailed notices follow for people without a valid email.
September 15, 2026 — Court Approves Website Update
The court approves the update announcing the November 15 target (Dkt. 692). The window for sending allocation information is extended to 60 days, and it is not a hard cutoff.

Three Things to Watch For
A known payout date and a known per-work amount give imposters an easy script:
“Confirm your Anthropic payment” emails with a link
The real portal is linked from the official settlement site, anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com (its allocation portal sits on the secure.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com subdomain), and asks for the Claim Number and PIN printed in your September notice. A message that sends you to a different domain, or asks for a fee or your full bank login to “release” your $2,203.56, is not from the administrator. If in doubt, call JND at 1 877-206-2314.
“You missed the deadline, but we can still get your $3,000”
The claim deadline was March 30, 2026. Late-claim requests go through the administrator and class counsel to the court, not through a paid recovery service. And the first payment is about $2,203.56 per work, not $3,000.
Paid helpers for split disputes
If a publisher, agent or co-author disputes your share, the process runs through the administrator and the court-appointed Special Master. Someone offering to “win your share” for a percentage of the payout is selling a service, not part of the settlement. Read any agreement before you sign it.
Anthropic Payout Date — Questions People Actually Ask
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.
What is the Anthropic settlement payout date?
The official site expects to send the first round of payments on or before November 15, 2026. That is the Anthropic payout date for undisputed works whose claimants have provided all their payment information. As of October 19, 2026, no payment has been confirmed as sent.
What is the current status of the Anthropic settlement?
Final approval was granted July 20, 2026. Claims closed March 30, 2026. Claim notices went out September 2–4, 2026, and the parties agree the Effective Date has passed, because the only appeals concern the fee award. First payments are pending.
How much will authors get from the Anthropic settlement?
Class counsel puts the first payment at about $2,203.56 per work. That is per book, before it is divided among the rightsholders on it, such as an author and a publisher. More may follow once Anthropic pays its final $450 million plus interest, but no date or amount has been published for a later distribution.
When to expect a settlement payment if my work is disputed?
Not in the first round. Disputed works are held in reserve and paid after the co-claimants agree or the Special Master decides. The 60-day window for sending allocation information is not a deadline, and some disputes may take longer.
How to get money from the Anthropic settlement?
If you filed a valid, timely claim, you do not need to file anything new. Log in to the portal with the Claim Number and PIN from your notice, check your shares and keep your payment details current. The claim deadline passed on March 30, 2026; class counsel said it would submit late-claim requests for the court’s review.
What is the Anthropic class action lawsuit payout date if there are appeals?
The two Ninth Circuit appeals (26-5391 and 26-5455) were filed by law firms excluded from the fee award. Class counsel told the court that both concern the fee award only. Under the settlement, appeals limited to fees do not delay the Effective Date, so the Anthropic class action lawsuit payout date stays on or before November 15, 2026, unless a late appeal is allowed to go forward.
Why is the first payment less than $3,000?
The court’s estimate of about $3,000 per work was before costs and fees and assumed the full $1.5 billion. The first distribution uses about $1,083,000,000 that is already in the fund. Fees, expenses, service awards and a cost reserve come out first, which leaves $2,203.56 per work across 449,731 claimed works.
How will I be paid, and how do I reach the administrator?
By the payment method you chose on your claim form. If you chose a check, keep your address current with the administrator. Contact: Anthropic Copyright Settlement, c/o JND Legal Administration, 1 877-206-2314, or the official settlement website.
