Hyundai Engine Settlement Update: Who Gets Paid Now, and How to Check
Questions about this case?
AI Legal Assistant · free · answers in seconds · general information, not legal advice
There is no lump-sum payout date for the Hyundai engine settlements. Both are final, and the cash for past repairs closed years ago. What is still paying is a rolling program: if a covered engine fails now, you claim within 90 days and Hyundai reviews and pays that claim. The VIN check on the official site is free.

Is the Hyundai Engine Settlement Paying? The Short Answer
This page covers payment only; the case itself, covered models and warranty rules are on our Hyundai engine lawsuit page.
Hyundai engine settlement update, October 2026: yes, money still goes out, but not in waves. Each settlement pays individual claims as they are approved. There is no fixed fund being split, no “payment date” for everyone and no second round.
Who can still claim: owners whose covered engine has a qualifying failure or fire now. The claim must reach the administrator within 90 days of the expense, the repair or the fire. Who cannot: anyone hoping to claim old repairs. Those windows closed on August 9, 2021 (Theta/Engine I) and July 8, 2024 (Engine II).
Case Details
Two settlements, one judge, one court: the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Judge Josephine L. Staton.
Engine I (Theta II GDI): In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation, No. 8:17-cv-00838-JLS-JDE. Final approval order dated May 10, 2021; judgment entered June 10, 2021. The court counted 3,956,568 Hyundai and Kia class vehicles. Official site: hma-thetasettlement.com.
Engine II (Theta II MPI, Nu GDI, Gamma GDI): In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation II, No. 8:18-cv-02223-JLS-JDE. Final approval order dated April 9, 2024; judgment entered April 26, 2024. About 2 million class vehicles. Official site: hma-e2settlement.com.
Both sites are run by the administrator Angeion Group.
Status: Final, Paying Claim by Claim
Not the theft settlement. Many “Hyundai settlement update” posts are about the separate Kia/Hyundai anti-theft settlement, whose payments are frozen. See our report on the theft settlement freeze. Engine claims are not affected by it.
Automatic or Claim? The VIN Check Decides
Automatic, no form: the warranty extension. Engine I gives a lifetime short-block warranty; Engine II gives 15 years or 150,000 miles from original delivery. Both require the knock sensor (KSDS) software update. The warranty is a repair, not a check.
Only with a claim: every cash benefit — towing, rental or ride-share, repair-delay pay, incidentals, total loss in an engine fire, and the trade-in rebate. If you do nothing, the official sites say, you get no money.
The free Hyundai engine settlement VIN check: enter your VIN on the “Submit Claim” page of the official site. If it is an eligible vehicle, the portal opens. For the Hyundai Theta engine settlement VIN check, use hma-thetasettlement.com; for MPI, Nu and Gamma engines, hma-e2settlement.com. Whether KSDS was installed: HyundaiUSA.com/Recall, (800) 633-5151 or 855-371-9460. Engine II cash benefits also required that update by November 4, 2023.
How Much Each Claim Pays
Engine II: rental or ride-share up to $80 per day, towing in full; repair delay $75 for 61–180 days, then $100 plus $100 for each further 30 days; incidentals up to $125 near home, or up to $300, $200 and $100 over three days beyond 150 miles; fire total loss at Black Book value minus what you received, plus $150; trade-in rebate up to $2,500, $2,000, $1,500 or $1,000 depending on model year.
Engine I (Theta): rental up to $40 per day; delay $50 for 61–90 days plus $25 per further 30 days; fire total loss plus $140 goodwill; rebate from $2,000 down to $500.
Paid, not estimated: no official source reports what has actually been paid out. The last official count is of claims submitted: the Engine I approval order records that 5,503 Hyundai class members had claimed about $9.9 million for past repairs by September 16, 2020. We checked again on October 11, 2026 and found no later update. The $1.3 billion often quoted is the court's valuation of all Engine I benefits, mostly warranty, not cash.
How it arrives: the claim form asks you to choose a payment method. Delay compensation can be taken as a Hyundai dealer service card worth 150% of the cash amount.

Three Things to Watch For
Searches for a Hyundai engine settlement update and a VIN check attract people selling what is free:
Paid “settlement VIN check” sites
The official VIN check is free on hma-thetasettlement.com and hma-e2settlement.com. A site charging for it, or asking for your Social Security number, is not part of the settlement.
Payment emails from the wrong domain
Real messages come from addresses ending in @hma-thetasettlement.com or @hma-e2settlement.com, such as Confirmation@ or info@. A text or email from another domain asking for bank details should be checked by calling the number on the official site.
“Reopened deadline” claim services
Neither official site lists a reopened deadline for old repairs. Anyone offering to recover a 2019 repair bill for a fee is selling a claim that closed in 2021 or 2024.
Hyundai Engine Settlement Payments — Questions People Ask
Is the Hyundai engine settlement VIN check free?
Yes. Enter your VIN on the Submit Claim page of hma-thetasettlement.com (Theta II GDI) or hma-e2settlement.com (MPI, Nu and Gamma engines). If the vehicle is eligible, the claim portal opens. There is no fee.
How do I check the status of my claim?
Log in on the official site with the Claim ID and Confirmation Code from your Initial Determination Notice. Or contact the administrator: Theta at (866) 944-7620 or info@hma-thetasettlement.com; Engine II at (877) 755-4237 or info@hma-e2settlement.com. Do not call the court.
What is the average payout per person in a class action lawsuit?
There is no average here. Each benefit has its own cap, and the amount depends on your receipts — a towing bill is repaid in full, a repair delay of 61–180 days pays $75 under Engine II. For other settlements, our payout calculator shows the typical ranges.
My claim was denied or underpaid. What now?
Under the Theta settlement, you can request BBB-administered arbitration by mailing Hyundai a written notice within 60 days of the denial; Hyundai pays the arbitration fees unless the claim was in bad faith. For Engine II, ask the administrator for the review terms in the Settlement Notice.
My settlement check was lost or expired. Can it be reissued?
Neither official site publishes a reissue procedure or a cashing deadline. Call the administrator line for your settlement — (866) 944-7620 or (877) 755-4237 — and have your Claim ID ready.
What is going on with the Kia settlement?
Kia owners of Optima, Sorento and Sportage models are in the same Engine I class, but Kia runs its own claims program — see our Kia engine settlement page. If you mean the Kia/Hyundai theft settlement, its payments are on hold; this page does not cover it.
Has Hyundai ever been sued over its engines?
Yes. The two engine settlements on this page came out of class actions in federal court in California, settled without any finding that Hyundai was liable. The case history is on our Hyundai engine lawsuit page.
Can I still get paid for an engine repair from years ago?
No. Past-repair claims closed August 9, 2021 for Engine I and July 8, 2024 for Engine II. Only failures or fires claimed within 90 days still qualify, and the warranty repair itself remains available.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
