BMW Class Action Lawsuit: Shark Fin Settlement Claims Close October 16, 2026

Questions about this case?

AI Legal Assistant · free · answers in seconds · general information, not legal advice

The class action lawsuit BMW owners are seeing in the news right now is Craft v. BMW of North America — leaking shark fin antennas on 2019–2020 X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7 models. It is settled, it has final approval, and the claim deadline is October 16, 2026. A separate X5 front-differential suit was filed in September 2026 and pays nothing yet. The old N63 engine oil-burning settlements are covered further down.

What the BMW Lawsuits Say

Shark fin antenna (Craft). The lawsuit alleged that the shark fin antenna on certain 2019–2020 BMW SUVs was improperly sealed to the roof, so water got in and damaged the parts underneath — the telematics unit, its battery, GPS and radio. BMW denies all the allegations and settled to end the litigation.

Front differential (Heckler). A newer lawsuit against BMW alleges the company told owners of xDrive vehicles that front differential fluid lasts the car’s “lifetime,” while knowing that never changing it makes the differential fail early. The complaint says failures generally occur after 50,000 miles or four years — outside the new-vehicle warranty. These are allegations; nothing has been decided.

N63 V8 oil consumption (Bang and Isley). Two earlier class actions alleged that BMW’s twin-turbo N63 V8 burned excessive oil. Both settled. This is what people mean by the class action lawsuit BMW N63 engine owners still ask about.

Case Details

Shark fin: Craft v. BMW of North America LLC, et al., No. 2:24-cv-06826-WJM-CF, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, before Judge William J. Martini. Filed June 7, 2024.

Front differential: Heckler v. BMW of North America, LLC, No. 2:26-cv-06459, filed September 2, 2026 under Pennsylvania’s Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law.

N63 (first generation): Bang v. BMW of North America LLC, No. 2:15-cv-06945-MCA-SCM, District of New Jersey.

N63TU1: Isley, et al. v. Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft and BMW of North America, LLC, a nationwide settlement with final court approval.

Status as of October 2026: One Settlement Open for Claims

Shark fin: settled, final approval, claims open until October 16, 2026. The court granted final approval on August 17, 2026, and the claim deadline was extended from August 27 to October 16, 2026. Payments go out only after final approval and the resolution of any appeals, so a claim filed by the deadline is not paid immediately.

Front differential: newly filed, no settlement. As of October 2026, no class has been certified and there is no fund, no claim form and no deadline.

N63 engine: the Bang claim deadline passed on October 10, 2018. Isley benefits run through BMW dealers, not a claim form — see below.

Don't miss the claim deadline

Claims are due by October 16, 2026. We'll email you 7 days and 1 day before the deadline.

Who Is Covered by Each BMW Case

Shark fin settlement: current or former owners or lessees in the U.S., D.C. and Puerto Rico of a 2019–2020 BMW X3, X4, X5, X6 or X7 built between November 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020. If you received a notice, it carries your class member ID. You can file a claim for each eligible vehicle.

Front differential (proposed): owners and lessees of G05 (X5), G06 (X6) and G07 (X7) vehicles with xDrive, up to model year 2025, who live in Pennsylvania or bought or leased there. That is the core of any class action lawsuit BMW X5 owners are reading about this fall.

N63TU1 (Isley): class vehicles include the F15 X5 xDrive50i (model years 2014 to 2018), the X6 xDrive50i (2015 to 2019) and N63TU1 versions of the 550i, 650i and 750i from model year 2013. Owners who opted out are excluded.

N63 (Bang): model-year 2009–2014 5, 6 and 7 Series, X5 and X6 with the N63 engine. Closed.

What the BMW Class Action Settlement Pays

This BMW class action settlement is a repair-cost reimbursement, not a flat cash payment. If you paid for a shark fin antenna, telematics unit or telematics battery repair before the settlement’s effective date:

At a BMW dealer: 100% of the cost, no cap, if the vehicle had fewer than 10 years and 120,000 miles at the time.
At an independent shop: 100% up to $2,000.

Any goodwill credit or insurer payment you already received is deducted. You need documentation — VIN, repair date, mileage, a description of the work and proof of payment. No receipt, no reimbursement.

Separately, BMW extended the warranty for the sealing defect to 10 years or 120,000 miles from the in-service date. That needs no claim. Class counsel is to receive $800,000 and the named plaintiff $5,000.

Front differential: no settlement, no fund, no claim form.

N63TU1 (Isley): oil-consumption diagnosis and repairs at a BMW center are covered at 100 percent for up to 10 years/120,000 miles. An engine replacement uses a sliding scale: 0% owner share below 50,000 miles, rising to 85% at 115,001–120,000 miles and 100% above 120,001.

How cases like this one end

Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 123,245 other contract casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2025, 5.8% of them filed as class actions:

  • •30.9% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 20.2% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 30.9% and 51.1%.
  • •7.6% were decided on a motion before any trial.
  • •1 in 71 reached a trial (1.4%), after a median of 29.3 months.
  • •Median time from filing to the end of the case: 7.6 months.
  • •Only 7,369 of them (6%) record a money award at all; the median of those is $402,000.

These are base rates for this type of case (federal other contract cases) — not a prediction about this lawsuit, and not legal advice. Source: Federal Judicial Center, Integrated Database (civil), analysed by Settlement Insight. Cases heard in state courts are not included.

BMW Class Action Timeline

    February 9, 2022 — Isley N63TU1 Benefits Begin

After final approval, the N63TU1 oil-consumption benefits become available through BMW centers. No claim form; the dealer checks eligibility by VIN.

  3. 3

March 2, 2026 — Shark Fin Deal Preliminarily Approved

The court in Craft (2:24-cv-06826) preliminarily approves the shark fin antenna settlement. Notices go out with class member IDs.

  4. 4

    August 17, 2026 — Final Approval

Judge William J. Martini grants final approval after the July 28, 2026 hearing. The claim deadline is moved from August 27 to October 16, 2026.

  5. 5

    September 2, 2026 — X5 Front Differential Suit Filed

  6. 6

October 16, 2026 — Shark Fin Claim Deadline

Last day to submit a shark fin reimbursement claim online or by postmarked mail. The extended warranty continues after this date without a claim.

Three Things to Watch For

A real BMW settlement with a near deadline, next to a brand-new lawsuit, is easy material for imposters:

“Claim your BMW payout” with no repair

The shark fin settlement reimburses documented repair costs only. A site promising a flat cash amount to any BMW owner, or asking for a fee, is not the Craft settlement. The official site is SharkFinSettlement.com and the administrator is Kroll.

“Join the X5 differential settlement”

There is no front-differential settlement. The Heckler case was filed in September 2026 and has no claim form. Anyone collecting your VIN and bank details for it is not a court administrator.

Paid “N63 engine claim” services

Isley N63TU1 benefits are handled by BMW centers at no charge — there is nothing to file through a third party. Check eligibility with a BMW dealer or the Isley settlement line, 1-888-208-0032.

BMW Class Action — Questions People Actually Ask

Which class action lawsuit BMW owners are hearing about right now?

Mostly the shark fin antenna settlement, Craft v. BMW of North America (D.N.J. No. 2:24-cv-06826). It received final approval on August 17, 2026, and claims are due by October 16, 2026. The new front-differential lawsuit, filed September 2, 2026, is the other one in the news.

Is the BMW shark fin settlement email or letter real?

The settlement is real. Genuine notices give a class member ID and point to SharkFinSettlement.com, administered by Kroll Settlement Administration (Craft Claims Administrator, P.O. Box 225391, New York, NY 10150-5391). The settlement phone line is 833-447-8559. Go to the site by typing it yourself rather than clicking a link.

How much will I get from the shark fin settlement?

What you paid out of pocket for the qualifying repair: 100% for BMW dealer repairs with no cap, 100% up to $2,000 at independent shops, minus any goodwill or insurance money you already got. If you never paid for a repair, there is nothing to reimburse — but the extended warranty still covers you.

I never had the leak. Do I need to do anything?

No claim is needed for the warranty extension to 10 years or 120,000 miles from the in-service date. If the seal fails later within that window, a BMW center repairs it at no cost.

Is there a class action lawsuit BMW N63 engine owners can still join?

Not by filing a claim. The Bang settlement closed in 2018. The Isley N63TU1 settlement works through BMW centers: engine replacement contributions run until the later of 10 years from your car’s in-service date or one year after the settlement took effect. Ask a BMW dealer to check your VIN.

Is there a class action lawsuit BMW X5 owners can claim from?

Two cases touch the X5. The 2019–2020 X5 is in the shark fin settlement (claims by October 16, 2026). The G05 X5 is at the center of the Heckler front-differential lawsuit, which has no settlement and, as proposed, covers Pennsylvania owners only.

What does the front differential lawsuit against BMW say?

The 17-page complaint alleges BMW marketed front differential fluid in xDrive vehicles as “lifetime” fluid while knowing that never changing it causes premature failure, typically after 50,000 miles or four years. BMW has not been found liable, and no class has been certified.

When will shark fin payments be sent?

Only after final approval and the resolution of any appeals. Final approval came on August 17, 2026; no payment date has been published. Keep your repair invoices and proof of payment until the claim is paid.
