The Credit Acceptance settlement payout comes in two parts on two different clocks. Debt relief — wiping out the remaining balance on certain car loans — is due on or before November 2, 2026. The $60 million in cash restitution has no published payment date yet, and no administrator or administrator website has been announced as of October 11, 2026. Nobody files a claim: eligible people were picked from Credit Acceptance’s records and will be contacted.

Two Kinds of Payout, Two Timetables
This page covers only the money and the dates. For the case itself — what the attorneys general alleged and which loans qualify — see our main Credit Acceptance settlement page.
1. Debt relief (most of the money). Credit Acceptance (CAC) must waive the full outstanding balance on certain open accounts by November 2, 2026, the Effective Date in the consent judgment. That is estimated at $388,000,000 for people whose cars were repossessed and $246,000,000 for people who still have their cars. No check arrives — the balance goes to zero.
2. Cash restitution ($60 million). CAC pays $60,000,000 into a trust account run by a settlement administrator that the states choose. That is the only part that becomes checks or deposits, and the states have not announced when it will go out.
Case Details
The payout terms are set by separate consent judgments that CAC signed on September 17, 2026 with 40 state attorneys general and the District of Columbia. Each is subject to court approval in its own jurisdiction; the Maryland judgment filed with the SEC is to be entered by a Circuit Judge for Howard County. The settlement also resolves the New York Attorney General’s lawsuit filed on January 4, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 1:23-cv-00038. CAC admitted no wrongdoing. Source documents: CAC’s Form 8-K and the Maryland consent judgment.
Status: Debt Relief Due November 2, Cash Not Yet Scheduled
The $60 million cash fund runs on a different track: CAC pays it within 10 business days of receiving payment instructions from the states’ executive committee, and the committee decides who gets money and how much. No administrator name, website or mailing date has been published as of October 11, 2026.
Who Gets Paid Automatically
Everyone who gets something gets it automatically. The California Attorney General states that eligible consumers “have already been identified, will be notified, and do not need to take action.” There is no claim form.
Debt relief: you are notified by Credit Acceptance itself. It covers certain loans made between November 1, 2015 and November 30, 2025 that were still open on December 1, 2025.
Cash restitution: you are notified by a claims administrator, not by CAC. The New York Attorney General describes the recipients as consumers “who lost their cars to repossession” within months of taking out the loan.
Questions: the attorneys general list 1-800-634-1506, Credit Acceptance’s number.
Credit Acceptance Settlement Payout Per Person
What is confirmed: debt relief goes to more than 55,000 consumers and totals more than $630 million, per the New York Attorney General. For you, debt relief equals whatever balance you still owed on the qualifying account — it is not a fixed sum.
State totals for the cash fund (estimates, not checks): California consumers about $1.46 million in restitution and $5.4 million in debt relief; Virginia consumers over $2 million in restitution and over $17 million in debt relief; Wisconsin consumers about $959,988 in restitution. Any per-person figure you see online is a guess.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 83,315 other statutory actions casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2026, 11.8% of them filed as class actions:
- 25.6% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 22.4% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 25.6% and 47.9%.
- 7.4% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 156 reached a trial (0.6%), after a median of 21.8 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 4.9 months.
- Only 1,756 of them (2.1%) record a money award at all; the median of those is $199,500.

Three Things to Watch For
A settlement with no claim form and a cash fund with no administrator yet is an easy target:
“Sign up for the Credit Acceptance settlement”
There is nothing to sign up for. Eligible people were identified from CAC’s own records. A site or social media post asking for your loan number or Social Security number to “get on the list” is not part of the settlement.
Fees to “release” your payout
Debt relief is a balance wiped to zero, not a payment you can buy faster, and the cash fund is paid by the administrator out of the trust. No real administrator charges a fee or asks for a gift card.
Fake administrator emails
As of October 11, 2026 no administrator or official domain has been announced. Until your state attorney general names one, treat any “restitution claim” email as unverified and check it by calling 1-800-634-1506 from your own phone, not a number in the message.
Credit Acceptance Settlement Payout — Questions People Ask
What is the Credit Acceptance settlement payout date?
Debt relief is due on or before November 2, 2026. The $60 million cash restitution has no published date as of October 11, 2026; it is paid after an administrator chosen by the states is in place.
How much is the Credit Acceptance settlement payout per person?
No per-person figure has been published. Debt relief wipes whatever you still owed on the qualifying loan. The cash amounts are set by the states’ executive committee, which has sole discretion over who gets what.
Do I need to file a claim?
No. The attorneys general say eligible consumers have already been identified and do not need to take action. Debt-relief recipients hear from Credit Acceptance; restitution recipients hear from a claims administrator.
What is the phone number for Credit Acceptance customer service to speak with a live person?
The attorneys general direct settlement questions to 1-800-634-1506. Use that number from your own phone rather than one printed in an unexpected message.
Will the settlement come off my credit report?
For waived accounts, CAC must stop reporting them and ask the three major credit bureaus to delete the trade lines, within 90 days of November 2, 2026 unless the judgment says otherwise. Check your reports after that window.
What is the lawsuit against Credit Acceptance?
State attorneys general alleged that CAC made car loans it knew borrowers could not afford. CAC admitted no wrongdoing. The full background is on our Credit Acceptance settlement page.
Will creditors accept a 50% settlement offer?
That is a question about negotiating your own debt, not about this settlement — the waivers here are set by the consent judgment, not negotiated. For negotiating a balance yourself, see how to negotiate a debt settlement yourself.
What happens if I lose or don’t cash a restitution check?
The judgment says uncashed checks may be voided once distribution efforts are complete, and unclaimed money goes to the states. No cashing deadline has been published yet; it should be printed on the check or the administrator’s notice.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
