What the Lawsuit Said Happened
In 2020 a patient filing as Jane Doe sued University Hospitals Health System in Cuyahoga County. The lawsuit alleges that tracking code on UH’s websites sent personally identifiable, non-public medical information and communications to third parties — Facebook, Google, Microsoft (Bing), Invoca.net, Liveperson.net, LPSNMedia.net and Typekit.net.
The case covered two things patients did online between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2022: logging into the UH patient portal, which at the time was FollowMyHealth, and booking appointments on UH websites such as uhhospitals.org. UH did not admit wrongdoing; the court notice says the settlement is not an admission that it broke the law.
Case Details
Jane Doe v. University Hospitals Health System, Inc., Case No. CV-20-933357, Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, Ohio. This is a state-court case, not a federal one. The court granted preliminary approval and conditionally certified a settlement class. Class counsel are Spangenberg, Shibley & Liber (Cleveland) and Simmons Hanly Conroy; UH is represented by Baker & Hostetler. The administrator is Kroll Settlement Administration, and the official site is UniversityHospitalsSettlement.com.
Status: Settled, Claim Period Over
As of October 8, 2026 we could not confirm the court’s final approval order or the payment date from a public record: the official settlement site blocked our access and the county docket was not reachable. Under the notice, payments go out only after the settlement becomes final. If you filed a claim and have questions about your payment, ask Kroll through the official site.
We found no other University Hospitals class action lawsuit over tracking, and no University Hospitals settlement for a ransomware or vendor data breach with an open deadline.
Who Was in the Settlement Class
The class was people living in the U.S. who are or were UH patients and, between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2022, either logged into the UH patient portal or scheduled an appointment through a UH website. The notice says this is believed to mean FollowMyHealth users and online schedulers.
Using UH MyChart today does not put you in this case. UH switched to Epic in October 2023, and MyChart is now its portal. That is after the class period ended, so MyChart activity was not part of this settlement. If you did nothing by the deadlines, you get no payment but are bound by the release of claims about the alleged sharing.
Our MyChart claim form guide asks what you did on the website or in MyChart and when — that is the fastest way to see whether any other hospital case still fits you.
What the Settlement Pays
Only people who filed a claim by March 17, 2025 can be paid. For how other hospital tracking deals compare, see the MyChart settlement tracker; for breach cases involving stolen data, the data breach settlement calculator.

Three Things to Watch For
A closed settlement with a familiar hospital name still draws imitators:
“Late claim” or “reopened” UH settlement sites
The claim deadline was March 17, 2025. The official site is UniversityHospitalsSettlement.com, run by Kroll. Any other page offering to file a University Hospitals settlement claim now, especially for a fee, is not the settlement.
Payment calls or texts asking for bank details
Payments go only to people who filed by the deadline and chose a payment method on their claim. Treat any call or text that asks for a fee or your full Social Security number before releasing a $35 payment as suspect, and check with Kroll through the official site.
“New UH MyChart lawsuit” sign-up ads
Law firm ads about “investigating” hospitals are not lawsuits. As of October 8, 2026 we found no filed University Hospitals MyChart lawsuit. Read any retainer before you sign it.
University Hospitals Lawsuit — Questions People Actually Ask
Is there a University Hospitals MyChart lawsuit?
Not that we could find as of October 8, 2026. The settled case covered the FollowMyHealth portal and UH website scheduling from 2016 through 2022. UH moved to Epic MyChart in October 2023, after that period. For how MyChart lawsuits work in general, see is MyChart being sued?
Can I still file a claim in the University Hospitals settlement?
No. The claim deadline was March 17, 2025, and the opt-out and objection deadline was February 15, 2025. Both have passed.
How much did the University Hospitals settlement pay?
$35 per valid claim, subject to pro rata adjustment, from an initial $3 million fund, with up to $2 million more if claims ran over.
When will I get my $35?
The notice says payment comes after the settlement is final and effective. The final approval hearing was set for March 20, 2025. We could not confirm the order or the payment date, so ask Kroll through UniversityHospitalsSettlement.com about your claim.
Was this a University Hospitals data breach?
Not a hack. The lawsuit alleges that tracking code on UH websites shared patient information with companies such as Facebook and Google. We found no University Hospitals data breach settlement for a ransomware or vendor incident with an open deadline as of October 8, 2026.
Is the letter or email from Kroll real?
The court-approved notice names Kroll Settlement Administration, the website UniversityHospitalsSettlement.com, and the mailing address Doe v. University Hospitals Health System, c/o Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, PO Box 225391, New York, NY 10150-5391. A message that sends you elsewhere or asks for a fee should be treated as suspect.
Are there other lawsuits against University Hospitals?
Yes, on other subjects. After a 2018 storage tank failure at the UH fertility clinic destroyed about 4,000 eggs and embryos, a Cuyahoga County judge consolidated the lawsuits; at that point 40 separate suits had been filed, and many families sued individually rather than as a class.
What can a UH patient do now?
Keep any settlement notice or claim confirmation. In UH MyChart, review your account activity and privacy settings. For Northeast Ohio comparisons, see the Cleveland Clinic MyChart lawsuit.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
