CertainTeed Shingles Lawsuit: Which Settlement Covers Your Roof

There is no new CertainTeed shingles class action in the news as of October 2026 — what people find are two older settlements that still take claims. One covers organic shingles made from July 1, 1987 through 2005 (MDL 1817, approved September 1, 2010). The other covers Horizon fiberglass shingles installed between 1995 and 2010 (Segebarth v. CertainTeed), with a claim deadline of March 2, 2030. Which one applies depends on what is on your roof.

What the CertainTeed Shingles Class Action Lawsuits Alleged
Organic shingles (MDL 1817). The plaintiffs alleged that CertainTeed's organic asphalt shingles — made with a felt mat rather than fiberglass — were subject to premature failure and did not perform as users reasonably expected. CertainTeed denied this and said the vast majority of the shingles are free of any defect. It stopped making organic shingles; everything it has sold after 2005 is fiberglass.
Horizon fiberglass shingles (Segebarth). A second CertainTeed shingles lawsuit, filed November 21, 2019, alleged that Horizon-line fiberglass shingles crack, fishmouth, curl and lose granules long before their warranties run out, and that warranty claims were mishandled. CertainTeed did not admit wrongdoing when it settled.
Landmark 30 (Washington). A separate proposed class action, Wetzel v. CertainTeed Corporation, alleged granule loss in Landmark 30 shingles made in Portland between January 1, 2004 and June 30, 2007. We could not confirm how it ended, and it produced no claim form we can find.
Case Details
The organic-shingle case is In re: CertainTeed Corporation Roofing Shingles Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 1817, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. It was assigned to Judge Louis Pollak, then Judge Robert F. Kelly, and in November 2020 to Judge Timothy J. Savage.
The Horizon case is Segebarth, et al. v. CertainTeed LLC, No. 2:19-cv-05500, in the same court. The Landmark 30 case was Wetzel v. CertainTeed Corporation, No. 2:16-cv-01160, in the Western District of Washington. CertainTeed is a subsidiary of the French building-materials group Saint-Gobain.
Status: Two Settlements, Both Open to Claims
Organic shingles: approved September 1, 2010 and effective October 2, 2010. The official settlement site says CertainTeed “is processing and paying claims,” but that at present only owners whose shingles are still under warranty can claim. Many deadlines have already passed.
Horizon fiberglass shingles: the opt-out and objection deadline was November 22, 2022 and the final approval hearing was held December 22, 2022. The claim deadline is March 2, 2030, according to Top Class Actions; the official site, FiberglassHorizonSettlement.com, is the place to confirm it.
We found no new CertainTeed shingles class action filed in 2025 or 2026.
Don't miss the claim deadline
Claims are due by March 2, 2030. We'll email you 7 days and 1 day before the deadline.
Who Can Still Claim
Organic settlement: you owned a building whose roof had CertainTeed organic shingles made after July 1, 1987 — and you owned it on December 15, 2009, or sold it while keeping the right to claim, or had a warranty claim settled between August 1, 2006 and October 2, 2010. The covered brands include Hallmark Shangle, Independence Shangle, Horizon Shangle, Custom Sealdon 30, Hearthstead and Custom Lok 25. Over 94% were sold in nine Midwestern states, from Iowa to Wisconsin. If you bought the house from someone other than the builder or original buyer, the site asks you to contact CertainTeed before filing.
Horizon settlement: you own a building with Horizon fiberglass shingles installed between 1995 and 2010.
The catch: Horizon, Independence, Hallmark and Hearthstead were sold in both organic and fiberglass versions. Fiberglass shingles are not in the organic settlement. A roofer can usually tell; CertainTeed also reimburses up to $50 for removing a sample for identification.
What the CertainTeed Shingles Settlement Pays
Horizon fiberglass: no total was disclosed. Benefits include replacement shingles (partial if damage is under 5% of a roof plane), labor money for replaced areas that Top Class Actions reports as $40 “per square foot,” prorated (confirm the unit with the administrator), and a five-year warranty extension — 25 to 30 years for 1995–2003 installs, 30 to 35 years for 2004–2010 installs.

Three Things to Watch For
Old roofing settlements with long claim windows attract contractors and middlemen:
“We'll file your CertainTeed claim” roofers
Filing is free and done directly with the settlement administrator. A roofer can help identify shingles or document damage, but you never need to sign over your settlement payment or pay a filing fee.
“New CertainTeed class action — sign up now”
As of October 2026 we found no new CertainTeed shingles class action. Ads using the name are usually lead-generation forms, not claim forms. Check the case name and court before giving out your address or phone number.
Fiberglass roofs pitched as organic claims
Several brand names were made in both versions. Someone promising a payout under the organic settlement for a roof installed after 2005 is wrong: those shingles are fiberglass and are not covered by that settlement.
CertainTeed Shingles Class Action — Questions People Actually Ask
Is there a new CertainTeed shingles class action lawsuit?
Not that we could find as of October 2026. Anyone searching for a class action lawsuit CertainTeed shingles owners can act on today lands on two older settlements: the organic-shingle settlement (MDL 1817) and the Horizon fiberglass settlement (Segebarth). Both are still accepting some claims.
Is the CertainTeed shingles settlement still paying?
Yes, within limits. For organic shingles, the official site says CertainTeed is processing and paying claims, but only for shingles still under warranty. For Horizon fiberglass shingles, the claim deadline is March 2, 2030.
How do I know if my shingles are organic or fiberglass?
Ask a roofer, or have one remove a shingle and send it to CertainTeed for identification. CertainTeed reimburses up to $50 for that, but only if the shingle turns out to be theirs. If the roof went on after 2005, it is fiberglass.
How much does the organic settlement pay?
US$74 per square of damaged shingles, prorated by how much of the warranty period is left. A roof claimed halfway through its warranty gets roughly half. The official site has an estimate calculator.
What does the Horizon fiberglass settlement give me?
Replacement of damaged shingles, money toward labor for replaced areas (prorated), and five extra years of warranty. It covers Horizon fiberglass shingles installed between 1995 and 2010.
My warranty expired. Can I still claim?
Under the organic settlement, generally no — the official site says only owners whose shingles are still under warranty can claim. Under the Horizon settlement, the warranty extension may help; ask the administrator before assuming you are out.
Can I opt out and sue CertainTeed myself?
Not over matters these settlements resolved. The organic opt-out deadline was May 11, 2010 and the Horizon one was November 22, 2022. Class members who did not opt out are generally bound by the settlement; check the official sites for the final status of the Horizon approval.
Where are the official sites?

Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
