TurboTax Class Action Lawsuit: What Actually Paid, What's Vacated, What's New
If you searched for a TurboTax class action lawsuit, you probably saw claims of a $2,500 payout. The honest picture: the real money - a $141 million settlement with all 50 states - was paid automatically in 2023 in checks of about $29 to $85. The FTC's false-advertising order was thrown out on appeal in March 2026. Two new lawsuits were filed in 2026, but neither has a settlement. Here is each piece, verified.

What the 'Free' Cases Alleged
Intuit advertised TurboTax as free while most filers - gig workers with 1099 income, farmers, and others - could not actually use the free product. State attorneys general also found Intuit steered taxpayers who qualified for the IRS Free File program into paid products and hid its Free File landing page from search engines. The multistate agreement, announced May 4, 2022 and led by the New York Attorney General, covered people who paid for TurboTax in tax years 2016-2018 despite qualifying for Free File. The FTC brought a parallel case over the same 'free' advertising.
Case Details
Multistate settlement: In the Matter of Intuit Inc., all 50 states + D.C. FTC matter: Docket No. 9408, decided by the FTC in January 2024, then reviewed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (Intuit Inc. v. FTC, No. 24-60040). New 2026 case: Heck v. Intuit, Inc., MVB Bank & WebBank, No. 5:26-cv-03712 (Refund Advance loans).
Status: Old Money Paid, FTC Order Vacated, New Suits Active
The FTC order is gone: on March 20, 2026, the Fifth Circuit vacated the FTC's January 2024 deceptive-advertising order, holding the agency's in-house adjudication of these claims unconstitutional. That matter never included consumer payments.
Newly filed and active (no settlements yet): Heck v. Intuit (April 29, 2026) claims TurboTax Refund Advance loans exceeded the Military Lending Act's 36% rate cap for service members, and a July 2026 suit targets Credit Karma Money account security. A law-firm arbitration campaign over the Twilio tracking SDK in the TurboTax app advertises 'up to $2,500' - that is attorney intake, not a settlement.
Who Got Money - and Who Can Still Get Some
The 2023 checks went automatically to TurboTax users from tax years 2016-2018 who were eligible for IRS Free File but paid; Intuit's own records identified them. Nobody can file a TurboTax settlement claim today - there is no open claim window in any TurboTax matter. What you can still do: search your state's unclaimed-property database for an uncashed 2023 settlement check, or - if you used the TurboTax mobile app in recent years - register with the Labaton law firm's Twilio arbitration intake, which is legal representation with no guaranteed payment.

Watch Out For
The TurboTax query is heavily farmed by clickbait. Three specifics:
The '$2,500 TurboTax check'
No court has ordered any such payment. The figure comes from a law firm's arbitration advertising ('up to $2,500') and got repackaged by viral videos as a claimable settlement. It is not one.
Fake claim portals and phishing
The $141M settlement never had a claim form - payments were automatic. Any site or email asking you to 'register your bank details' for a TurboTax settlement is phishing.
Recycled old cases sold as new
2025 blog posts recirculate plaintiffs from a 2015 fraudulent-return case as if a new lawsuit had been filed. Check the docket date before believing a 'new TurboTax class action' headline.
TurboTax Class Action - FAQ
Is there a TurboTax class action settlement I can claim in 2026?
No. The only consumer money - the $141M multistate settlement - was paid automatically in 2023. No TurboTax matter has an open claim window today.
How much were the TurboTax settlement checks?
About $29-$30 per affected tax year, up to roughly $85 for people who paid in all three covered years (2016-2018). Checks went to ~4.4 million consumers.
What if I never got my check?
Uncashed settlement checks eventually go to state unclaimed-property programs. Search your state's unclaimed-property website (free) for your name - do not pay any third party to do it.
What happened to the FTC case against TurboTax?
The FTC's January 2024 order was vacated by the Fifth Circuit on March 20, 2026, on constitutional grounds. The matter was about advertising conduct and never included payments to consumers.
Is the '$2,500 TurboTax payment' real?
No. It is a law firm's 'up to $2,500' arbitration advertising for claims about a tracking SDK in the TurboTax app - individual legal representation, no settlement, no guaranteed money.
What are the new 2026 TurboTax lawsuits about?
Heck v. Intuit (filed April 29, 2026) alleges TurboTax Refund Advance loans exceeded the Military Lending Act's 36% rate cap for service members; a July 2026 case targets Credit Karma Money account security. Both are newly filed - no class certified, no settlement.
Can I still sue TurboTax myself?
TurboTax's terms push most customers into individual arbitration, which is why many 'lawsuits' here are arbitration campaigns. Whether arbitration or court fits your facts is a question for a consumer-protection attorney - most offer free consultations.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
