Ozempic, Mounjaro and Other GLP-1 Lawsuits: How Many Name Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly
Original analysis of 4,030 records from the Federal Judicial Center, October 2023–June 2026 (filing dates). Published October 17, 2026.
We counted every GLP-1 product liability case filed in or transferred to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, home of the federal Ozempic and Mounjaro litigation, and checked which drugmaker is listed as first defendant.
What the Federal Court Records Show
Of the 4,030 GLP-1 drug injury cases filed in federal court from October 2023 through June 2026, 3,346 (83.0%) named Novo Nordisk, maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, as first defendant, and 684 (17.0%) named Eli Lilly, maker of Mounjaro and Trulicity. That is about 4.9× as many cases against Novo Nordisk. Court records keep only the first-listed defendant, so cases that also name the other company are counted once.

Novo Nordisk is listed first in most cases
Novo Nordisk entities are the first-named defendant in 3,346 of 4,030 GLP-1 product liability cases (83.0%); Eli Lilly is first in 684 (17.0%).
Eli Lilly's share rose, then fell back
Cases naming Eli Lilly first made up 12.8% of filings in the second half of 2024, 25.5% in the second half of 2025 and 15.5% in the first half of 2026.
The busiest month
July 2025 was the busiest month in the series, with 534 new cases; Eli Lilly was named first in 32.0% of them.
A third of cases lack an MDL code
1,263 of the cases (31.3%) carry no multidistrict litigation number in the federal court data; counting only cases coded to MDL 3094 would miss them.
Our count matches the court panel's
Excluding cases coded to the separate eye-injury MDL, we count 3,912 cases filed before July 1, 2026; the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation reported 3,882 total actions in MDL 3094 on that date, a difference of 0.8%.
How Many GLP-1 Lawsuits Name Novo Nordisk vs. Eli Lilly
More than four in five federal GLP-1 injury cases list Novo Nordisk as the first defendant.
Novo Nordisk is the first-named defendant in 3,346 of 4,030 federal GLP-1 product liability cases (83.0%); Eli Lilly is first in 684 (17.0%).
Federal GLP-1 injury lawsuits are concentrated in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation centralized them as MDL 3094 in February 2024. The panel included both manufacturers: Novo Nordisk, which makes Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, and Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro and Trulicity.
We assigned each case to the company listed first among the defendants. Novo Nordisk entities (Novo Nordisk A/S, Novo Nordisk Inc. and affiliates) are listed first in 3,346 cases. Eli Lilly and Company is listed first in 684. When the panel created the MDL, it noted that Eli Lilly was named in 12 of 55 actions filed at that point.

How Many GLP-1 Lawsuits Are Filed Each Month
Filings arrive in waves rather than at a steady pace.
The busiest month was July 2025, with 534 GLP-1 injury cases filed or transferred into the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
New cases are counted by the date they were filed in, or transferred to, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Larger monthly totals often reflect many complaints filed directly into the MDL in a short period.
In July 2025, 32.0% of new cases named Eli Lilly first, compared with 17.0% across the whole period.

Is Eli Lilly's Share of GLP-1 Lawsuits Growing
Eli Lilly's share has moved up and down rather than following a steady trend.
Eli Lilly was the first-named defendant in 12.8% of new GLP-1 cases in the second half of 2024, 14.1% in the first half of 2025, 25.5% in the second half of 2025 and 15.5% in the first half of 2026.
The higher share in the second half of 2025 coincides with the filing wave of July 2025. In the first half of 2026, 888 new cases were recorded, and the share naming Eli Lilly first was 15.5%.
These shares describe who is listed first in new lawsuits. They do not measure how often either company's drugs cause injury or how many patients use each drug.

How Our Count Compares With the Official MDL Total
Our monthly totals track the court panel's official MDL count closely.
Before July 1, 2026, we count 3,912 GLP-1 cases not coded to the eye-injury MDL; the JPML reported 3,882 total actions in MDL 3094 on that date, a gap of 0.8%.
A simple count of federal court records tagged with MDL 3094 returns 2,805 rows. That figure misses 1,263 GLP-1 cases in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania that carry no MDL code, and it includes 113 rows from other districts that are copies of cases later transferred into the MDL.
We therefore counted cases in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with a GLP-1 manufacturer as first defendant, once per docket. Across monthly JPML reports since September 2024, the gap between our count and the official MDL 3094 total ranged from 0.1% to 17.6%; the largest gap, 17.6%, came in the report right after the July 2025 filing wave, before the JPML count caught up.

Checked against published figures
- GLP-1 product liability actions in MDL 3094 (E.D. Pa.), total historical, as of July 1, 2026: published 3,882, our count 3,912 (0.77% apart).JPML MDL Statistics Report: Pending MDL Dockets by Actions Pending, July 1, 2026
Full method and limits of the data
We included civil cases in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (FJC district code 13) with nature-of-suit code 365 (personal injury product liability) or 367 (health care/pharmaceutical product liability), selected by the FJC filing date (filedate) from June 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026 (the first matching case was filed in October 2023). The MDL field had to read 3094, 3163 (eye injuries, centralized in December 2025), the obvious typo 0309 (2 Novo Nordisk direct filings into MDL 3094, which we count) or be empty. The first-listed defendant field had to contain LILLY, MOUNJARO or ZEPBOUND (assigned to Eli Lilly, checked first) or NOVO, NORDISK, OZEMPIC or WEGOVY (assigned to Novo Nordisk, which also catches spellings such as NOVA NORDISK, NOVO NORIDSK and the parent Novo Holdings); records matching none of these, such as a truncated "INC., ET AL", are excluded. Cases transferred in from other districts are counted in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania only; their original records elsewhere are not counted again.
Reopened cases appear as additional records with the same docket number within the district; per docket we kept the record with the earliest filing date (ties: lowest record id), which removed 37 rows. Each case is assigned to Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly by the first-listed defendant; shares are cases for each company divided by all 4,030 cases.
To check completeness we compared the number of cases not coded to MDL 3163 filed before each JPML report date with the JPML's total historical actions for MDL 3094. On July 1, 2026, our count was 3,912 and the JPML figure 3,882.
What this data cannot tell you
- Federal court records store only the first-listed defendant. A complaint against both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly counts for whichever company is listed first, so the data cannot show how many cases name both companies or which drug a plaintiff used.
- The company is not the same as the drug: Novo Nordisk makes Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus and Saxenda; Eli Lilly makes Mounjaro and Trulicity. A case naming Eli Lilly first may concern Trulicity rather than Mounjaro.
- Cases without an MDL code that were filed since December 2025 may belong to MDL 3163 rather than MDL 3094; the federal data do not allow a clean split. The overall Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly shares include both.
- Courts report new cases to the federal judiciary with a delay, and the database is updated in batches. Counts for the most recent months, especially the first half of 2026, may rise in later releases, so a comparison of the latest half-year with earlier ones is preliminary.
- The number of lawsuits reflects filing decisions by plaintiffs and their lawyers. It does not measure injury rates, the number of patients taking each drug or the merits of any claim. GLP-1 cases filed in state courts are not included.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Ozempic lawsuits have been filed?
Federal court data show 4,030 GLP-1 drug injury cases filed in or transferred to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from October 2023 through June 2026. Of these, 3,346 name Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, as first defendant.
Who is being sued in the Ozempic and Mounjaro lawsuits?
The defendants are Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Novo Nordisk is the first-named defendant in 83.0% of federal GLP-1 injury cases and Eli Lilly in 17.0%.
How many Mounjaro lawsuits are there?
Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro and Trulicity, is the first-named defendant in 684 federal GLP-1 injury cases filed through June 2026. Court records do not show which drug each case concerns, so not all of these are necessarily Mounjaro cases.
Where are GLP-1 lawsuits being heard?
Federal GLP-1 injury cases are consolidated in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in MDL 3094 (gastrointestinal injuries) and MDL 3163 (vision loss from NAION). In our data, 118 cases are coded to MDL 3163.
Are new GLP-1 lawsuits still being filed?
Yes. In the first half of 2026, 888 new GLP-1 injury cases were recorded in the federal data, and the count for recent months may still be revised upward.
Why do counts of GLP-1 lawsuits differ?
Counts differ depending on whether they include pending cases only, transferred cases, the separate eye-injury MDL and state-court cases. Federal records tagged MDL 3094 return 2,805 rows, but miss 1,263 untagged cases and include copies of transferred cases.
