What the Tuna End Purchaser Settlement Is
“End purchasers” are shoppers who bought canned or pouched tuna at a store, as opposed to wholesalers who bought direct from the packers. The End Payer Plaintiffs allege that from June 2011 to July 2015 the big tuna packers conspired to raise or fix packaged tuna prices. The defendants deny the allegations and settled to avoid trial.
Three settlements make up the fund: $16.2 million from Chicken of the Sea and its parent Thai Union (COSI), $130 million from StarKist and its parent Dongwon, and $6 million from the Lion companies, the former owners of Bumble Bee. Total: $152.2 million. Bumble Bee itself filed for bankruptcy and was dismissed from the case.

Case details
The case is In re Packaged Seafood Products Antitrust Litigation, No. 3:15-md-02670-DMS-MSB, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, before Judge Dana M. Sabraw. The court certified the consumer class in July 2019; the Ninth Circuit affirmed on April 8, 2022, and the Supreme Court declined review on November 14, 2022. Judge Sabraw granted final approval of the StarKist and Lion settlements on November 22, 2024. Class counsel is Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz LLP in San Diego.
The court's own filings point to the same website: the July 27, 2026 disbursement order cites tunaendpurchasersettlement.com and names JND Legal Administration as the court-appointed Claims Administrator. Businesses that bought tuna directly from the packers have a separate case and a separate website, TunaDirectPurchaserCase.com.
Status: Paying Out Since September 8, 2026
The bounced checks. On September 16, 2026, JND and BankUnited, the bank holding the distribution account, learned that about 22,850 checks had been “improperly dishonored.” Per the court filing, BankUnited's fraud-prevention screening wrongly flagged them, and no settlement money was lost. On September 28, 2026, replacement checks went to 20,998 affected people, each with an extra $20 for bank fees. JND is working with the remaining 1,800 or so people individually. Electronic (PayPal) payments were not affected.
Cash-by dates. The FAQ gives November 7, 2026 as the deadline for original checks. Replacement checks have their own 60-day window. Under the court's order, a check not cashed within 60 days of issue lapses, and that payment is forfeited. To see where your payment stands, use our tuna settlement check-status guide.
Who Gets Paid — and Whether You Can Still Claim
Only people who filed a claim are paid. That means filing by December 31, 2024, or having filed in the earlier COSI settlement, which counted automatically. The court also accepted 310 late claims filed within a 120-day grace period. That decision is final. No new claims are accepted.
The class covers people who lived in one of the listed states, D.C. or Guam and bought canned or pouched tuna smaller than forty ounces for their own use between June 1, 2011 and July 1, 2015. Meal kits are excluded. If you did not file, you will not be paid, but you are still bound by the judgment.
Which emails are real: the administrator emailed every person whose check bounced. The official site says that if you got no such email, your check was not affected and is safe to deposit.
How Much People Are Getting
The 2024 notice estimated about $24.50 for every 200 cans, or roughly $0.12 a can. JND reviewed 980,568 claims. No official average payment has been published. Newsweek reports recipients describing amounts from roughly $150 to more than $2,000. Those are recipients' own reports, not official figures. Money left from uncashed checks may be redistributed. Otherwise it goes to the Consumer Protection Policy Center at the University of San Diego, after the court approves a final accounting.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 6,924 antitrust casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2026, 37.3% of them filed as class actions:
- 19.1% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 14.5% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 19.1% and 33.6%.
- 11.4% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 119 reached a trial (0.8%), after a median of 37.1 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 11.9 months.
- Almost none record a money award in this data (33 of 6,924), and the recorded figures are capped, so we do not publish an average.

Tuna End Purchaser Settlement Timeline
June 2011 – July 2015 — The Alleged Price-Fixing
The period in which, the plaintiffs allege, the packers fixed packaged tuna prices. Store purchases from June 1, 2011 to July 1, 2015 count.
November 14, 2022 — Class Survives Appeals
The Supreme Court declines to review the consumer class, which the Ninth Circuit had upheld on April 8, 2022. The COSI settlement had been approved on July 15, 2022.
November 22, 2024 — StarKist and Lion Approved
Judge Sabraw approves the $130 million StarKist and $6 million Lion settlements, bringing the fund to $152.2 million. Claims close December 31, 2024.
July 27, 2026 — Distribution Ordered
With all money paid in and appeals over, the court orders the net fund distributed, approves 310 late claims and sets a 60-day cash-by rule.
September 8, 2026 — Payments Issued
JND sends checks and PayPal payments. About 22,850 checks are then wrongly bounced by BankUnited, which Class Counsel reported to the court on September 17, 2026.
September 28, 2026 — Replacement Checks Mailed
20,998 replacement checks go out, each with $20 extra for bank fees. Original checks must be cashed by November 7, 2026. Replacements have a new 60-day window.
Three Tuna Settlement Fakes to Watch For
Real checks bouncing, and a fund that pays by mail and PayPal, give imposters an easy story. These are the ones that fit this case:
“Your check bounced — confirm your bank details”
The real fix needed nothing from you. Replacements were mailed automatically to the same address as the original check. Anyone asking for a bank login, card number or a “reissue fee” is not JND. The only thing the administrator asked for was proof of bank fees above $20, sent to info@tunaendpurchasersettlement.com.
“Switch your payment to PayPal or speed it up”
The official FAQ says JND cannot change a mailed check to PayPal and cannot reissue payments through PayPal. A message offering a faster electronic payment, or a link to “claim” your tuna money, did not come from the settlement.
“It's not too late to file a tuna claim”
It is. The deadline was December 31, 2024, and the court has already approved the final list of claims. A site that takes a new tuna claim, especially for a fee or your Social Security number, is not part of this settlement.
Tuna End Purchaser Settlement — Questions People Actually Ask
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.
Is the tuna end purchaser settlement legit?
Yes. It is a court-approved $152.2 million settlement in In re Packaged Seafood Products Antitrust Litigation, No. 3:15-md-02670, before Judge Dana M. Sabraw in the Southern District of California. tunaendpurchasersettlement.com is the official site, run by JND Legal Administration. The phone number is 866-615-0977, and the mailing address is P.O. Box 91442, Seattle, WA 98111.
Is the email from info@tunaendpurchasersettlement.com real?
The address is real. It is the administrator's published contact address, and JND emailed every person whose check was dishonored. To be safe, do not click links in an email. Type tunaendpurchasersettlement.com into your browser, or call 866-615-0977 and press 8 to verify your check. A genuine message never asks for a fee.
Why did my tuna settlement check bounce?
Not because of fraud on your end. BankUnited's fraud-prevention screening wrongly flagged about 22,850 checks, and no settlement money was lost. Replacement checks with an extra $20 were mailed on September 28, 2026. If your bank charged you more than $20, email the fee records to info@tunaendpurchasersettlement.com.
When to expect a tuna settlement payment?
It has already been sent. Approved claims were paid on September 8, 2026, by mailed check or PayPal, and replacement checks followed on September 28, 2026. If you filed and have nothing, ask JND to reissue the payment: send your full name, claim number, and current and former address. Our check-status page has the step-by-step version.
How much is the tuna end purchaser settlement paying per person?
There is no flat amount. Each payment is a pro rata share based on the cans or pouches claimed, after fees and costs. The 2024 notice estimated about $24.50 per 200 cans. Recipients have told Newsweek of amounts from roughly $150 to more than $2,000. No official average has been published.
How to know if a settlement is real?
Check whether the court's own filings name the website and administrator. Here, the July 27, 2026 order names both. A real administrator never charges a fee to pay you, and the official site lists the case number. We run the same check on other notices: bcbssettlement.com, telecomdatasettlement.com, lpdataincident.com and Kroll monitoring offers.
Can I still file a claim in the tuna end purchaser settlement?
No. The claim deadline was December 31, 2024, and the objection deadline was November 8, 2024. The court's July 27, 2026 order approved the final list of accepted claims. If you did not file, no payment is coming, and anyone offering to file one now is not connected to the case.
Is this the Bumble settlement, or about tuna safety?
Neither. Bumble Bee Foods was a defendant, but it went bankrupt and was dismissed. The Bumble dating-app case is unrelated: see our Bumble settlement page. This case was about prices, not product safety. For mercury, FDA advice lists canned light tuna (including skipjack) as a “Best Choice” and albacore as a “Good Choice.”
