What the Two Cases Are About
The MyChart tracking case. J.C. v. Catholic Health System, Inc. alleges that Catholic Health disclosed patients’ personally identifiable information to Meta, formerly Facebook, and other third parties without permission. The claims are under state and federal statutes. Catholic Health denies any wrongdoing. Per the HIPAA Journal, it also denies that tracking technologies were ever added to its patient portal or electronic medical record system. In a public statement, the system said it “strongly denies the allegations.” It settled after mediation.
The Catholic Health data breach. This case is against a vendor, not the hospital. Serviceaide, Inc. provided IT support services to Catholic Health. On November 15, 2024, Serviceaide found that a Catholic Health database it ran had been reachable online without a password between September 19 and November 5, 2024. The records of 483,126 patients were in it, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, insurance and treatment details, and usernames and passwords. Serviceaide found no evidence that the data was copied, but said it could not rule that out. The lawsuits allege negligence and a slow notice: patients were told around May 9, 2025. Serviceaide denies all wrongdoing.
Case Details
Both cases are in New York state court, not federal court.
Tracking case: J.C. v. Catholic Health System, Inc., Index No. 811986/2025, Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of Erie. The administrator is Kroll Settlement Administration. The official site is catholichealthsettlement.com, phone (833) 420-3938.
Breach case: Balzer v. Serviceaide, Inc., Index No. 625615/2025, Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of Nassau. The first suits were filed on May 19, 2025 in federal court in the Northern District of California. Eleven suits were later consolidated in Nassau County, where the case was filed on August 21, 2025. The administrator is also Kroll. The official site is ServiceaideDataSettlement.com. Our news report on the Serviceaide deal has the full background.
Status: Both Settled, Claims Closed
Serviceaide breach settlement: the court granted preliminary approval on May 21, 2026. The opt-out and objection deadline was August 17, 2026. The claim deadline was September 1, 2026. The final approval hearing was set for September 16, 2026. As of October 8, 2026 we could not confirm that ruling either. Payments start only after final approval and any appeals.
You cannot file a new claim in either case. If you already filed, there is nothing more to do. Payment goes to the method you chose on your claim form.
Other matters. In May 2025, Catholic Health System agreed to pay $3,293,122.66 to resolve federal False Claims Act allegations tied to the Stark Law. That was a government case, and patients get nothing from it. We found no other Catholic Health class action lawsuit over billing, prices or tracking.
Who Was Covered
MyChart case, Subclass 1: current or former patients who logged into Catholic Health’s MyChart portal (mychart.chsbuffalo.org) from January 1, 2020 through December 11, 2025. This group could claim cash.
MyChart case, Subclass 2: all other patients treated by Catholic Health in the same period. This group could claim privacy monitoring, not cash.
Breach case: U.S. residents whose information was in the exposed Serviceaide database. The proof is a notice letter from Serviceaide sent in 2025.
This page covers Catholic Health in Western New York. If you mean a different Catholic hospital system, see CommonSpirit Health or Trinity Health. Our form on this page asks whether you used the website or MyChart, what you did there and when you last used it. Your answers help us match you to the right case.
What Each Settlement Pays
Serviceaide breach: the $1.8 million fund is non-reversionary, so no money goes back to Serviceaide. Claimants chose between documented losses up to $5,000, with receipts, or a flat cash payment estimated at $50. The flat payment is pro rata, so it can go up or down depending on how many people claimed. Fees, administration costs and awards to the 15 class representatives come out of the fund first.

Three Things to Watch For
Two settlements, the same administrator and a well-known hospital name make it easy for fake messages to look real:
“Late claim” offers for either settlement
Both claim deadlines have passed: April 10, 2026 for MyChart and September 1, 2026 for Serviceaide. A message asking you to “file now” or pay a fee to recover a missed claim is not from Kroll.
Emails that only look like the Kroll notice
The real MyChart notice came by email, and Catholic Health got calls from patients asking if it was real. Do not use links in a message. Type catholichealthsettlement.com or ServiceaideDataSettlement.com yourself, or call (833) 420-3938.
Calls asking for your Social Security number
The Serviceaide database held Social Security numbers and portal passwords. A caller who knows your doctor or your record number has not proven anything. No administrator asks for your full Social Security number or a fee by phone.
Catholic Health Lawsuit — Questions People Actually Ask
Is there a Catholic Health MyChart lawsuit?
Yes. It is J.C. v. Catholic Health System, Inc., Index No. 811986/2025, in Erie County, New York. It alleges patient data went to Meta and other third parties. Catholic Health denies it and settled. Claims closed April 10, 2026.
How much is the Catholic Health settlement?
The MyChart deal offered up to $20 for portal users and twelve months of privacy monitoring for other patients. The Serviceaide breach deal is a $1.8 million fund that offered documented losses up to $5,000 or about $50 in cash.
Can I still file a claim?
No. The MyChart deadline was April 10, 2026 and the Serviceaide deadline was September 1, 2026. Neither can be reopened for new claims.
When will I get paid?
Only after the court grants final approval and any appeals end. The MyChart hearing was April 23, 2026 and the Serviceaide hearing was September 16, 2026. As of October 8, 2026 we could not confirm either ruling. Check the official sites for updates.
Was the Catholic Health data breach Catholic Health’s own system?
No. The database belonged to the vendor Serviceaide, which held Catholic Health patient records to provide IT support. That is why the case names Serviceaide, not the hospital. Catholic Health is giving up its own claims against Serviceaide as part of the deal.
What is the Catholic Health patient portal called?
It is Epic MyChart, at mychart.chsbuffalo.org.
Was the email from Kroll real?
Kroll Settlement Administration is the real administrator in both cases. Patients did receive real notice emails. To check one, type the official site address yourself instead of clicking a link.
Is there another Catholic Health class action lawsuit?
As of October 8, 2026 we found none over billing, prices or staffing. The May 2025 Stark Law settlement was a federal government case, and patients do not get money from it.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
