Where the Money Came From
This was not a court class action. It was an out-of-court agreement between Intuit and all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, called an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance. Intuit signed it on April 29, 2022, and it was announced on May 4, 2022. Intuit paid $141 million: $2.5 million for administration costs and $138.25 million for refunds to customers. The states picked Rust Consulting as the administrator. Intuit did not admit wrongdoing.
Case Details
Because no court handled the payout, there is no judge, no final-approval hearing and no appeal deadline for the money. A committee of state attorneys general decided who gets paid and how much. The agreement is posted by the New Jersey Attorney General. A separate FTC case (Docket 9408) never paid consumers. On March 20, 2026 the Fifth Circuit (No. 24-60040) set aside the FTC's January 22, 2024 order in a 3-0 ruling and sent the case back to the agency.
Status: Paid in May 2023, No Second Round Announced
As of October 12, 2026, we found no announcement of a second round, a leftover distribution or any new TurboTax settlement check, from the states or from the administrator. The official site, AGTurboTaxSettlement.com, blocked our automated check, so look there yourself for any later notice.
Who Got a Check Automatically
There was no claim form. If you qualified, Rust Consulting sent you an email (in Texas, an email or a postcard) and then a check. You did not have to do anything.
You qualified if, for tax year 2016, 2017 or 2018, you were eligible for Intuit's IRS Free File product, started in TurboTax Free Edition, were told you did not qualify, and then paid for TurboTax. You were excluded if you had used Intuit's Free File product in an earlier year. Joint filers counted as one recipient.
If you never got an email or a check, you were most likely not on the list. There is no way to sign up now.
How Much Each Person Was Paid
By state: New York said more than $5.4 million would go to more than 176,000 residents. Texas said more than 465,000 residents would be paid. Nebraska said $837,114 for more than 27,353 consumers.
How: paper checks only. The settlement terms say restitution is distributed “by check.” None of the official announcements mention PayPal, Zelle or direct deposit. Getting a check did not require you to stop using TurboTax.

Three Things to Watch For
A small, automatic payment that ended in 2023 makes an easy story for scammers:
“Claim your TurboTax settlement payment” pages
Nobody ever had to file a claim, and payments went out in 2023. A site that wants your Social Security number, your TurboTax login or a fee to “release” your check is not the administrator. The Texas Attorney General warned that you never had to give account credentials or pay money.
Fake “your check has not been deposited” emails
Rust Consulting did send real reminders about uncashed checks, so copies are believable. Do not click a link to “verify” anything. Type AGTurboTaxSettlement.com into your browser yourself, or call your state attorney general's consumer line.
“Second round” or “bonus payment” claims
Some websites say a larger second round is coming in 2026. As of October 12, 2026, no attorney general or administrator has announced one. Treat any message promising one, especially one that asks for bank details, as fake.
TurboTax Settlement Check — Questions People Actually Ask
When will TurboTax settlement checks be mailed?
They already were. Checks were mailed throughout May 2023, and some arrived in early June 2023. As of October 12, 2026, no new mailing has been announced. If you are only now asking when will turbotax settlement checks be mailed, the honest answer is that the one round of mailing ended in 2023.
How much was the TurboTax settlement payment?
It depended on how many of tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018 you qualified for. Most people were expected to get $29 to $30, and three qualifying years paid up to $85. Payment was by paper check.
I never got my TurboTax settlement check. What can I do now?
The reissue process opened in mid-June 2023 and needed the claimant ID from Rust Consulting's email. Check AGTurboTaxSettlement.com for any current instructions. If you were paid but never cashed the check, the agreement sends that money to your state's unclaimed property fund, based on your last known state. Search your state's official unclaimed property site. That office, not a paid finder, decides your claim.
My TurboTax settlement check expired. Is the money gone?
Not necessarily. The agreement lets the administrator void uncashed checks only after reasonable attempts to reach you and at least 90 calendar days. The money then goes to state unclaimed property funds. Your state's unclaimed property office is the place to look. Our settlement check problems guide explains how to search.
Will there be a second TurboTax settlement payment?
Nothing has been announced. Under the agreement, any leftover money goes where the state attorneys general's oversight committee directs. As of October 12, 2026, we found no announcement of a second round, a leftover distribution or a charity (cy pres) payment.
Is TurboTax being sued right now?
The multistate case is resolved and paid. The FTC's separate order against Intuit was set aside by the Fifth Circuit on March 20, 2026 and sent back to the agency. That case never included payments to consumers. For other TurboTax lawsuits, see our TurboTax class action page.
Is this the same as my tax refund? How do I track refunds through TurboTax?
No. The settlement check came from Rust Consulting, not from the IRS, and it has nothing to do with your refund. Track a federal refund with the IRS “Where's My Refund?” tool. The IRS says a refund status is available 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return.
How do I know a TurboTax settlement letter or email is real?
The real checks came in envelopes from the “Intuit Multistate Settlement Administrator,” after an email or postcard from Rust Consulting. A real notice never asks for a fee, your TurboTax password or bank login. If in doubt, go to AGTurboTaxSettlement.com yourself instead of using a link.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
