What the Lawsuit Said Was Wrong
Owners filed the case in federal court in New Jersey on February 28, 2025. They alleged a defect in the main engine water pump — the mechanically driven pump and its gasket — that can fail early and leak coolant, and that can end in a head gasket replacement. They claimed Volkswagen did not disclose the problem and sued for breach of express and implied warranties, violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, fraudulent concealment, state consumer-protection violations and unjust enrichment.
Volkswagen Group of America denies all of it and maintains the vehicles are not defective. No court decided who was right; the case ended in a settlement, not a verdict.

The official website is MainEngineWaterpumpSettlement.com (phone 1-888-227-1902). Its name contains neither “Volkswagen” nor “Atlas” — that is normal, not a warning sign.

Is My Atlas Covered?
The class is every person or entity that bought or leased, in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, one of the specific model year 2018–2022 Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport vehicles with the 3.6-liter engine on the settlement's VIN list. The court's final approval order puts the class at about 290,017 vehicles and about 502,302 current and former owners and lessees.
Not every 3.6L Atlas is on the list. The only reliable test is the VIN lookup on the official site.
Former owners count: you can claim for a repair you paid for while the vehicle was yours. Excluded are, among others, used-car dealers, people who bought for resale, buyers of salvage-title vehicles, insurers, extended-warranty companies and the 21 people who validly opted out.
What You Get — and the Cap Most Coverage Gets Wrong
1. Reimbursement (claim required). For one main engine water pump repair you paid for before July 6, 2026, within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles of the vehicle's in-service date: 80% of the paid invoice, parts and labor. Plus 80% of up to two head gasket repairs in the same window — but only if the repair record says the work was done because of a coolant leak or low coolant level.
The $820 and $3,325 caps apply only to independent shops. If the work was not done by an authorized Volkswagen dealer, the invoice amount counted is limited to $820 for the water pump and $3,325 for a head gasket repair, so the most you get back is 80% of that: $656 and $2,660. The settlement sets no dollar cap for work done at an authorized VW dealer. Anything already covered by goodwill, an insurer or a service contract is deducted.
2. Warranty extension (automatic). Since July 6, 2026, the new-vehicle warranty covers 80% of a failed water pump repair at an authorized VW dealer, up to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first. You pay the other 20%. It transfers to later owners.
The settlement names no payment for towing, rental cars or other costs. An expert declaration filed in the case (ECF No. 45) valued the whole package at about $10.5 million; the court accepted that figure when it approved the attorneys' fees.

Is It Real? Three Traps to Watch For
The official site's name does not mention Volkswagen, the deadline is days away and the claim runs on paper — exactly the gap imitators fill:
“File your Atlas claim online” sites
There is no online claim form. The genuine claim goes by first-class mail to: Briggs v. Volkswagen Group of America Settlement, c/o Rust Consulting, Inc. - 9154, PO Box 2599, Faribault, MN 55021-9599. A site that asks for a card number, your Social Security number or a “filing fee” is not the administrator. The official site's VIN lookup only checks eligibility; it does not file anything.
“Water pump recall” calls and texts
This is a settlement, not a recall — NHTSA lists no water pump recall for these vehicles. A message urging you to “activate” the extended warranty for a fee is not from Volkswagen: the extension already applies, and the repair is done at a VW dealer, where you pay 20%.
Claim services that take a cut
You do not need a lawyer or a paid filing service. Class counsel already represents the class, and their $790,000 fee is paid by Volkswagen separately. The official form is two pages: your details, the repair invoice, proof of payment, a signature.

Which vehicles are in the water pump class action?
Specific model year 2018–2022 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles with the 3.6-liter engine, sold or leased in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. What paperwork do I need?
The signed claim form; the repair invoice showing your name, the VIN, the shop's name and address, the date, the mileage, the work done with a parts-and-labor breakdown, and the amount; and proof that you paid. For a head gasket repair, the invoice must say it was done because of a coolant leak or low coolant. If an independent shop did the work while the original warranty was running, add proof that a VW dealer declined first — or the signed declaration form from the official site. If you were not the person the notice was mailed to, include proof you owned or leased the vehicle at the time.
My water pump failed after July 6, 2026. What now?
That repair cannot be claimed for reimbursement. Instead, the warranty extension applies: an authorized Volkswagen dealer repairs it and the warranty covers 80%, as long as the vehicle is within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles of its in-service date. Work done at an independent shop after July 6, 2026 is covered by neither benefit. For the oldest 2018 models, check the in-service date — the 8.5-year window may already have closed.
When will I be paid?
Rust Consulting mails a check within 150 days of receiving your complete claim or of the settlement's Effective Date, whichever is later. The Effective Date is the third business day after appeal rights on the September 10, 2026 judgment have run out. Checks are valid for 180 days. If something is missing, you get a letter saying what to send and by when. Claim status: 1-888-227-1902.
Is this a recall, and should I still check my VIN at NHTSA?
It is not a recall. As of September 30, 2026, NHTSA's database lists no water pump recall for 2018–2022 Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. It does list unrelated campaigns — for example 26V590000, filed September 11, 2026, for a steering-rack bolt that may corrode and break on certain 2018–2019 Atlas vehicles, with owner letters expected November 10, 2026. Run your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls; recall repairs are free and separate from this settlement.
