Nissan CVT Settlement: Which Payout Covers Your Model Year

Nissan has faced continuously variable transmission (CVT) class actions across nearly its whole CVT lineup since 2013 — and settled them separately, model by model. The most recent, Beaver et al. v. Nissan of North America, Inc., covers roughly 520,000 2015-2018 Murano and 2016-2018 Maxima vehicles; its reimbursement-claim deadline closed July 3, 2025, and the court held its Final Approval and Fairness Hearing on July 18, 2025. An earlier, separate settlement already resolved CVT claims for about 1.9 million 2014-2018 Rogue, 2015-2018 Pathfinder, and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60 vehicles back in 2021-2022. Both settlements work the same way: an automatic extended warranty on the transmission, plus reimbursement if you already paid for a repair.

What's Wrong: A Recurring CVT Defect Pattern

Across every model named in these lawsuits, plaintiffs describe the same core problem: Nissan's continuously variable transmission (CVT) can hesitate, judder, shake, surge or stall during normal driving — especially when accelerating from a stop or merging onto a highway — and is prone to premature failure well before the vehicle's mileage would suggest. Complaints allege Nissan knew about defective CVT units as early as 2013 but continued selling and leasing affected vehicles without disclosing the risk, and in some cases denied warranty coverage for CVT problems that arose while the vehicle was still under its original warranty. Nissan has denied any defect or wrongdoing in every one of these cases; each settlement resolves the claims without an admission of liability.

Case Details

Two separate class actions cover different Nissan CVT model years. Beaver et al. v. Nissan of North America, Inc., Case No. 3:22-cv-00785, U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, Nashville Division (Hon. Eli J. Richardson), covers 2015-2018 Nissan Murano and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles. Settlement administrator: Verita Global, LLC — official website MuranoMaximaCVTSettlement.com; objections/exclusions were mailed to CVT Litigation Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301172, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1172. The earlier, related case — Stringer et al. v. Nissan of North America, Inc., Case No. 3:21-cv-00099, same court (Hon. William L. Campbell) — resolved CVT claims for 2014-2018 Nissan Rogue, 2015-2018 Nissan Pathfinder and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60 vehicles via a nearly $277.7 million settlement, official site RoguePathfinderQX60CVTSettlement.com.

Current Status: Murano/Maxima Claims Closed, Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 Still Rolling

As of August 2026, two Nissan CVT settlements are relevant depending on your model. The newer Murano/Maxima settlement (Beaver v. Nissan) received preliminary approval on December 5, 2024; the reimbursement-claim deadline closed July 3, 2025, and the court held its Final Approval and Fairness Hearing on July 18, 2025 (rescheduled from an originally set March 28, 2025 date). No new reimbursement claims are being accepted, but the 84-month/84,000-mile warranty extension applies automatically to every eligible VIN — no claim form needed — so it already covers qualifying transmission repairs. The older Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 settlement (Stringer v. Nissan) finished its main claim window back in March 2022, but its terms still let owners file a reimbursement claim within 30 days of a qualifying transmission repair, so it technically remains open on a rolling basis for vehicles still inside their extended warranty window.

Who's Covered by Each Settlement

Murano/Maxima settlement: current and former owners/lessees of 2015-2018 Nissan Murano and 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima vehicles equipped with a CVT (non-hybrid), purchased or leased in the U.S. or its territories before April 4, 2025 — roughly 520,000 vehicles. The window to submit a reimbursement claim or opt out closed in 2025; if you didn't exclude yourself, you're automatically a class member and automatically get the extended warranty. Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 settlement: current and former owners/lessees of 2014-2018 Nissan Rogue, 2015-2018 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60 vehicles with a CVT — about 1.9 million vehicles. The original claim deadline (March 22, 2022) has passed, but reimbursement claims tied to a new qualifying repair can still be filed within 30 days of that repair, as long as the vehicle is within its extended warranty coverage. If your Nissan is an Altima, Sentra, or Versa, it isn't part of either settlement — those models have faced separate CVT class actions since 2017-2018 that haven't reached a comparable public settlement.

How Much Is It Actually Worth? No Lump-Sum Checks Here

Neither settlement pays a flat cash amount just for owning an affected car — the value depends entirely on whether your transmission needs work. Murano/Maxima: Nissan automatically extends the transmission assembly and transmission control unit warranty to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever comes first. Repairs at a Nissan dealer during that window are 100% covered; repairs at an independent shop are reimbursed up to $5,000. Owners with two or more qualifying transmission repairs can instead take a $1,500 voucher toward a new Nissan or Infiniti. The settlement doesn't disclose a single total dollar value in public filings — it's a benefits settlement, not a common cash fund. Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60: the court valued the combined benefits at nearly $277.7 million across roughly 1.9 million vehicles — a 24-month/24,000-mile warranty extension, the same 100%-dealer/$5,000-independent-shop reimbursement structure, and a $1,000 voucher for owners with two or more repairs. In both cases: if your transmission never fails, you don't get a check — the benefit is free or reimbursed repairs if and when it does.

Timeline: A Decade of Nissan CVT Litigation

  1. 1

2013 — First CVT complaints surface

Lawsuits later allege Nissan knew as early as 2013 that its continuously variable transmissions — used across the Altima, Sentra, Versa, Rogue, Pathfinder, Murano, Maxima, and Infiniti QX60 — were prone to hesitation, juddering, shaking and premature failure, kicking off more than a decade of model-by-model class actions.

  2. 2

    October 13, 2021 — Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 settlement gets preliminary approval

Judge William L. Campbell preliminarily approves a nearly $277.7 million settlement in Stringer v. Nissan, covering roughly 1.9 million 2014-2018 Rogue, 2015-2018 Pathfinder, and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60 vehicles.

  3. 3

    March 22, 2022 — Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 claim deadline closes

The main filing window ends ahead of a May 23, 2022 fairness hearing in Nashville; reimbursement claims tied to later repairs remain allowed within 30 days of the repair, on a rolling basis.

  4. 4

October 4, 2022 — Beaver v. Nissan filed over Murano, Maxima CVTs

Travis Beaver, Luz Pineda, Susanne Hanes and Carl Kirksey sue Nissan of North America in the Middle District of Tennessee, alleging the same pattern of CVT defects in 2015-2018 Murano and 2016-2018 Maxima models.

  5. 5

    December 5, 2024 — Preliminary approval for Murano/Maxima settlement

Judge Eli J. Richardson preliminarily approves the settlement for roughly 520,000 Class Vehicles and appoints Verita Global as administrator, initially setting a March 28, 2025 Fairness Hearing.

  6. 6

July 3–18, 2025 — Claims close, Fairness Hearing held

The reimbursement-claim deadline closes July 3, 2025, and the rescheduled Final Approval and Fairness Hearing takes place July 18, 2025. The 84-month/84,000-mile warranty extension is active on every eligible VIN.

Scam Alert: Fake Nissan CVT Settlement Contacts

Two large, well-publicized Nissan settlements plus millions of affected VINs make an easy cover story for scammers. Watch for:

"Pay a fee to unlock your warranty or voucher"

Neither settlement ever charges a fee — not to confirm eligibility, not to file a reimbursement claim, not to activate the warranty extension or redeem a voucher. The extended warranty applies automatically to your VIN; nobody legitimate will ask you to pay to "release" it.

Lookalike settlement websites

The only official sites are MuranoMaximaCVTSettlement.com (administered by Verita Global) and RoguePathfinderQX60CVTSettlement.com. Don't click links in unsolicited texts or emails — type the address into your browser yourself, and never enter your VIN, SSN, or bank details on a site you reached through a link.

"Claim recovery" services charging a cut

Third-party "settlement recovery" companies sometimes contact affected owners offering to file the reimbursement claim for a percentage of the payout. Filing is free and only needs paperwork you already have (repair receipts, VIN) — there's no reason to pay someone else to do it.

Nissan CVT Settlement FAQ

Which Nissan CVT settlement covers my car?

It depends on the model and year. 2015-2018 Murano and 2016-2018 Maxima fall under Beaver v. Nissan (settled 2024-2025). 2014-2018 Rogue, 2015-2018 Pathfinder, and 2015-2018 Infiniti QX60 fall under the earlier Stringer v. Nissan settlement (2021-2022). Altima, Sentra, and Versa CVT complaints have been litigated separately and haven't reached a comparable public settlement.

Can I still file a claim?

New reimbursement claims for the Murano/Maxima settlement closed July 3, 2025. For Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60, the original deadline was March 22, 2022, but you can still file a reimbursement claim within 30 days of a qualifying transmission repair as long as your vehicle remains within its extended warranty window. Either way, the warranty extension itself needs no separate claim — it's tied automatically to your VIN.

Do I need to do anything to get the extended warranty?

No. If your VIN is in the eligible range and you didn't exclude yourself from the class, the transmission warranty extension applies automatically the next time you bring your car to a Nissan or Infiniti dealer — you don't need to submit paperwork in advance.

How much money will I actually get?

There's no flat check just for owning the car. You're covered for repair costs if your CVT fails within the extended warranty window: 100% at a dealer, up to $5,000 at an independent shop, or a $1,500 (Murano/Maxima) or $1,000 (Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60) voucher if you've had two or more qualifying repairs. If your transmission never fails, there's nothing to collect.

Are MuranoMaximaCVTSettlement.com and RoguePathfinderQX60CVTSettlement.com legit?

Yes. Both are official, court-referenced settlement websites — Murano/Maxima is administered by Verita Global, LLC under Judge Eli J. Richardson's order in the Middle District of Tennessee. Always type the address directly rather than clicking a link in an email or text.

What if I already paid out of pocket for a CVT repair?

If the repair happened within your settlement's claim window (before July 3, 2025 for Murano/Maxima; ongoing on a rolling basis for Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60) and falls within the extended warranty period, you may be eligible for reimbursement — 100% at a dealer or up to $5,000 at an independent shop, with receipts and repair documentation.

Is my Altima, Sentra, or Versa covered by either settlement?

No — those models are not part of the Murano/Maxima or Rogue/Pathfinder/QX60 settlements. Nissan has faced separate CVT class actions over Altima, Sentra, and Versa models dating back to 2017-2018, but as of August 2026 those haven't produced a comparable public settlement covering those specific model years.
