The Prilosec lawsuit is not a class action. It is thousands of individual injury suits claiming that Prilosec (omeprazole) and other heartburn drugs called proton pump inhibitors caused kidney disease. AstraZeneca settled its cases for $425 million in October 2023 and says it resolved the claims between 2022 and 2024. As of October 1, 2026 the federal court still lists 11,404 pending cases. There is no consumer settlement, no claim form and no deadline. Newer stomach-cancer claims are being advertised, but no court has ruled on them.

What the Lawsuits Claim
Prilosec contains omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that cuts stomach acid. Prescription Prilosec came from AstraZeneca. The over-the-counter version, Prilosec OTC, is a Procter & Gamble product, and generic omeprazole comes from many makers.
The lawsuits allege that long-term PPI use caused chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury and acute interstitial nephritis. They also allege the makers failed to warn patients and doctors. AstraZeneca says most of the suits against it alleged kidney injury. According to the complaints as summarized by Drugwatch, AstraZeneca knew of kidney risks as early as 2004. AstraZeneca has always said the claims are without merit and admitted no wrongdoing.
A separate, smaller set of claims alleges stomach (gastric) cancer. Takeda’s SEC filing says some plaintiffs against it alleged gastric cancer. Defendants have argued those cases do not belong in the kidney MDL.
Case Details
Federal cases are consolidated as In re: Proton-Pump Inhibitor Products Liability Litigation (No. II), MDL No. 2789, No. 2:17-md-02789-CCC-MF, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey before Judge Claire C. Cecchi. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation received the motion on May 31, 2017 and centralized the cases on August 2, 2017. The JPML’s October 1, 2026 report lists 11,404 actions pending and 18,755 filed over the life of the MDL. Defendants named in PPI suits include AstraZeneca, Procter & Gamble, Pfizer and Takeda. There were also cases in state courts.
Status: Main Defendants Settled, MDL Not Closed
The MDL has not been closed. According to Drugwatch, Judge Cecchi stayed all pending deadlines in April 2024 until further order. These are private settlements of individual lawsuits, so they only pay plaintiffs who had filed claims. There is no class settlement for Prilosec buyers, no fund, no administrator, no claim form and no deadline.

Who Is Actually Covered
Only people who filed their own injury lawsuit (or signed up through a lawyer for a settlement program) are covered by the PPI settlements. Simply having bought or taken Prilosec, Prilosec OTC or generic omeprazole does not make you part of any case. There is no U.S. Prilosec class action or omeprazole class action for consumers.
In Canada, three proposed class actions against AstraZeneca over Nexium and Losec (the Canadian name for Prilosec) were all dismissed as of September 2025. A separate proposed class action against Takeda is pending in Saskatchewan.
If you have a kidney or stomach-cancer diagnosis after years of PPI use, the question is an individual claim and your state’s filing deadline. Filing deadlines differ by state, and some may already have passed. That is a question for a lawyer you choose, not for a sign-up form.
What the Settlements Paid
For anyone who did not file a lawsuit: nothing is payable. There is no settlement, no fund and no claim form for Prilosec buyers. No court has found that PPIs cause kidney disease or stomach cancer. For how actual class settlements pay out, see our payout calculator.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 166,050 health care/pharmaceutical product liability casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2025:
- 34.5% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 17.9% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 34.5% and 52.4%.
- 9% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 2,863 reached a trial (0%), after a median of 32 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 26.3 months.
- Almost none record a money award in this data (18 of 166,050), and the recorded figures are capped, so we do not publish an average.

Three Things to Watch For
Heartburn-drug ads come back every time a new study or blog post goes around. Watch for these:
“Claim your Prilosec settlement payment”
There is no Prilosec claim portal. The $425 million went to people with pending injury lawsuits. Anyone asking for a fee or your bank details to “release” a share is not a court administrator.
“Join the omeprazole class action” forms
There is no U.S. omeprazole class action to join. Lead-generation forms collect your medical history and sell it to law firms. Read any retainer before you sign it, and don’t treat it as registration.
Stomach-cancer ads posing as news
Some stomach-cancer ads may suggest a payout is available. As of October 2026 no court has approved any PPI stomach-cancer settlement or found that omeprazole causes cancer.
Prilosec Lawsuit — Questions People Actually Ask
Is there a Prilosec class action lawsuit?
No. There is no U.S. Prilosec class action and no class action lawsuit Prilosec buyers can join. The Prilosec lawsuit is a group of individual personal-injury cases consolidated in MDL 2789. In Canada, three proposed Nexium/Losec class actions against AstraZeneca were dismissed as of September 2025.
Is there an omeprazole class action lawsuit for generic users?
No. Searches for a “class action lawsuit omeprazole” turn up law-firm ads, not a certified class. Generic omeprazole users would bring an individual omeprazole lawsuit, and whether that can succeed depends on the maker and state law.
How much did AstraZeneca pay?
$425 million, announced October 3, 2023, covering about 11,000 claims according to plaintiffs’ counsel. AstraZeneca admitted no wrongdoing. Per-person amounts were not published.
Can I still file a claim or get money?
There is no claim form and no deadline, because there is no class settlement. The settlements paid people who had filed lawsuits. A new individual claim depends on your diagnosis and your state’s statute of limitations.
Why does the court still show 11,404 pending cases?
The JPML’s October 1, 2026 report lists 11,404 actions pending in MDL 2789, out of 18,755 total. The sources we reviewed do not explain the gap, and neither the court nor the companies have published a breakdown.
What about Prilosec OTC from Procter & Gamble?
Prilosec OTC is a Procter & Gamble product, and P&G was one of the PPI defendants. Its settlement terms have not been made public in court filings we could verify. There is no Prilosec OTC consumer refund program.
Is there a Prilosec stomach cancer lawsuit?
Some lawsuits allege that long-term PPI use causes gastric cancer. Takeda’s SEC filing says some of the suits against it made that claim. As of October 2026, no court has ruled on causation, and there is no stomach-cancer settlement or claim process.
What is worth doing right now?
Don’t stop a prescribed medication without talking to your doctor. If you have kidney disease or stomach cancer after long PPI use, keep your pharmacy and medical records. Ignore anyone offering a “Prilosec class action” payout for a fee. For real open settlements, see open class action settlements.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
