What Does a Settlement Check Look Like? How to Tell a Real One
Reference Guide
There is no standard design. A real class action or government refund check looks like an ordinary business check — and so does a fake one. What separates them is not the paper but the facts around it: who sent it, whether the official settlement site says payments went out, the void date printed on it, and whether anyone asks you for money or bank details. Checks are also no longer the only option: many settlements now pay by PayPal, Venmo or Zelle.

What a Real Settlement Payment Looks Like
It comes from the administrator, not the company you sued. Settlements and government refund programs are paid out by a claims or refund administrator. The FTC names that administrator in its refund announcements — Simpluris, for example, ran the FTC’s refund to 39,500 consumers in its case over get-rich-quick “kits” — so you can check the sender against the official page.
It has a deadline printed on it. The FTC told recipients in that case to cash their checks “within 90 days, as indicated on the check.” Windows differ by case: Amazon’s FTC-ordered Prime refunds “expire 60 days after the issue date,” while the court-approved notice in a Connecticut ticket-fee settlement says its checks “will expire and become void 180 Days after they are issued.”
It costs nothing to cash. In the FTC’s words: “You don’t have to pay for an FTC refund, and you don’t have to give any information to cash a refund check.”
It may not be a check at all. Amazon pays “by mailed check or electronic payment (PayPal or Venmo).” The Connecticut notice pays by check unless you choose PayPal, Zelle or Venmo.
Case details
Who issues the payment depends on the kind of case.
Class action settlements are paid under a court-approved plan. The notice in Linders v. Festival Fun Parks, LLC, Civil Action No. 3:25-cv-00659-SVN (D. Conn.), shows the typical sequence: claims by November 24, 2026, a fairness hearing on December 8, 2026, and payment “within 60 Days of the settlement becoming Final.” The notice itself states: “A court authorized this Notice. You are not being sued. This is not a solicitation from a lawyer.”
FTC refunds come from a refund administrator working for the agency, or, in the Amazon case, from Amazon under the FTC order.
Personal injury settlements handled by a lawyer go through the lawyer first. State conduct rules numbered 1.15 require client money to be kept in a separate account. Tennessee’s version says that on receiving the funds the lawyer “shall promptly notify” you, “shall promptly deliver” what you are entitled to and, on request, “shall promptly render a full accounting.”
Is My Settlement Check Real? A Five-Point Check
2. Confirm payments have actually gone out. Official pages say when distribution started; our open settlements list and case pages such as Amazon Prime settlement check status track this.
3. Match the sender to the administrator named on the official page, and call the number listed there — not the one on the check.
4. Read the void date and cash it in time.
5. Walk away if anyone wants money back. A real settlement check never comes with instructions to return part of it, buy gift cards or pay a “release fee.”
Why the Look of a Check Proves Nothing
The FTC is blunt: “fake checks generally look just like real checks, even to bank employees. They are often printed with the names and addresses of legitimate financial institutions.” Some are drawn on real accounts belonging to identity-theft victims.
Your bank will not save you in time. “By law, banks have to make deposited funds available quickly. Even if you see the funds in your account, that doesn’t mean it’s a good check.” It can take weeks for a fake to bounce — and then you owe the bank.
Settlement-themed fakes are not new. In a 2006 alert, the Washington Attorney General described a letter claiming a class action had awarded the recipient $125,000, sent with a check for $2,915 that bounced after it was deposited. The check was written on the real account of a real company, and the law firm on the letterhead did not exist.
How Much Will the Check Be?
A check for far more than you expected, from a case you never filed in, is a warning sign, not a windfall. To estimate a realistic share, use the class action settlement payout calculator; for injury claims, see what to do after a car accident. Whether you owe tax depends on what the payment replaces — see do you have to pay taxes on a settlement.

Three Settlement Check Scams to Know
These are the ways fake settlement payments have actually been used:
The overpayment: deposit it and send some back
You get a “settlement” check and a reason to wire, transfer or gift-card part of it to someone. Once the check bounces, weeks later, the money you sent is gone and you repay the bank. A real settlement never asks for money back.
A copy of a real refund in the news
While real AMG refund checks were going out, scammers handed job applicants checks that looked like them. A real program in the headlines makes a copy believable. Check the sender against the official refund page before you rely on the money.
A fee or bank details to release your payment
The FTC says it never requires people to pay money or provide account information to get a refund, and no one from Amazon will ask for money for a Prime refund. A caller offering “special access” or a faster payout is running a scam.
Settlement Checks — Questions People Actually Ask
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.
What does a settlement check look like?
Like an ordinary business check. There is no standard design. Real ones usually come from a claims or refund administrator, carry a printed void date (60, 90 and 180 days are all used in real cases), and cost nothing to cash. Many settlements now pay by PayPal, Venmo or Zelle instead.
Is a settlement check real?
You cannot tell from the paper; the FTC says fakes fool even bank employees. Find the official settlement or refund page yourself, confirm that payments have gone out, and match the administrator. If anyone asks you to pay, send money back or give bank details, it is a scam.
Who sends class action settlement checks?
A settlement or refund administrator appointed under the settlement or the government order — for example, Simpluris for one FTC refund. In the Amazon Prime case, Amazon pays under the FTC order and handles questions through admin@SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com.
How long do I have to cash a settlement check?
Whatever is printed on it. Amazon Prime refunds expire 60 days after issue, recent FTC refund checks allow 90 days, and the Lake Compounce settlement allows 180 days. If yours has expired, contact the administrator listed on the official site.
How much of a 20k settlement will I get?
For a lawyer-handled injury case, it depends on your fee agreement and on any liens. The money goes to your lawyer first. Under conduct rules like Tennessee’s Rule 1.15, the lawyer must promptly pay out what is undisputed, hold disputed amounts separately and give you a full accounting on request.
What settlements are paying out right now?
As of September 2026, the FTC says Amazon has issued more than $845 million in Prime refunds and will keep sending automatic payments through April 2027. For other cases, see our open class action settlements list.
Why did I get a check for a settlement I never filed a claim in?
It can be real: some settlements and FTC orders pay automatically, and Amazon’s Prime refunds need no claim. It can also be a fake built around a real case in the news. Verify it on the official page before you deposit it, and never send any part of it back.
Where do I report a fake settlement check?
The FTC asks people to report fake check scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and to their state Attorney General. If you already sent money, contact the wire service, gift card company or bank you used right away.
