Holian Settlement Payout Date: Review Substantially Done, Payments “Soon,” Still No Date
Settled — Claims Period Closed
Claim deadline was October 13, 2025 · as of Oct 15, 2026
The Holian settlement is the second, smaller payout from the June 2021 Chemtool fire in Rockton, Illinois: $5.5 million from Holian Insulation, the contractor whose work the lawsuit blames for the fire. A judge approved it on October 23, 2025. As of October 15, 2026, no checks have gone out. The administrator now says claim review is substantially completed and distribution will begin “soon” — but it has published no date. If you filed, or had an approved Chemtool claim, you do not need to do anything.

What the Lawsuit Says Happened
On June 14, 2021 a fire broke out at the Chemtool grease plant at 1165 Prairie Hill Road in Rockton and sent a plume of smoke, dust and debris over the surrounding area. It was not fully out until June 23. The class action alleges that the fire damaged homes and property within three miles of the plant and cost residents the use of their property, including through evacuation.
The plaintiffs allege that Holian Insulation Company, a contractor working at the plant that day, shared responsibility with Chemtool. On December 12, 2021, OSHA fined Holian $9,557, finding that a scissor lift struck a pressure tap on a hot oil return pipe, causing an oil leak and the fire, according to the Rockton-Roscoe News. Holian denied all wrongdoing and pointed to Chemtool’s alleged failure to protect the plant from fires; settling is not an admission.
Case details
The case is Grasley, et al. v. Chemtool Inc., No. 21 L 162, in the Circuit Court of the 17th Judicial Circuit, Winnebago County, Illinois, before Associate Judge Stephen E. Balogh. It is a state case, not a federal one. Two related class actions, consolidated as Mackey, were removed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Western Division) against Chemtool and its parent, The Lubrizol Corporation. The judge granted preliminary approval of the Holian deal on June 27, 2025 and final approval on October 23, 2025, at a hearing in Belvidere. The settlement administrator is Analytics Consulting LLC; Huntington Bank is the escrow agent. The official site is holiansettlement.com.
Status: Approved, Claims Closed, Payments Not Yet Sent
The timeline has slipped repeatedly. In a November 7, 2025 email, Analytics Consulting projected payments in the first quarter of 2026. In April 2026 a call-center representative told a resident the timeline was extended to the second quarter. By early October 2026, residents calling the call center were hearing fall. We track both shifts in our news coverage: the quarter-by-quarter delays and the administrator’s “distribution soon” update. The quarter estimates came from the call center; the attorneys and the administrator have not confirmed any of them publicly.
Who Gets Paid
The class covers people who, on June 14, 2021, were Illinois citizens and owners or tenants of property in Illinois within a three-mile radius of the Chemtool plant. Holian, Chemtool, their officers and employees, and the lawyers’ staff are excluded.
Only people with a valid claim will be paid. If your claim in the earlier Chemtool settlement was approved, it was automatically counted for Holian — you did not need to file again. Everyone else had to submit a claim form by October 13, 2025. That deadline has passed, and the exclusion and objection deadlines (September 11, 2025) have too. If you did nothing and had no approved Chemtool claim, you are bound by the settlement but will not receive a payment.
How Much the Holian Checks Are Likely to Be
Your own amount depends on how many claims are approved, whether you owned or rented, how far your property was from the plant, whether it was residential, and how many people lived there. The administrator reported more than 5,000 claims, against roughly 7,000 eligible claimants. Treat $500 as a rough average, not a promise.
Holian Settlement Timeline
June 14, 2021 — The Chemtool Fire
A fire at the Chemtool plant in Rockton sends smoke and debris over nearby neighborhoods. It burns until June 23.
June 27, 2025 — Preliminary Approval
Judge Stephen E. Balogh preliminarily approves the $5.5 million Holian settlement, separate from the earlier $94.5 million Chemtool deal.

April–October 2026 — The Date Keeps Slipping
Call-center staff tell residents first the second quarter, then fall. Neither date is confirmed publicly by the administrator or counsel.
October 2026 — Review “Substantially Completed”
The official site says claim review is substantially done and distribution will begin soon. As of October 15, 2026, no payment date is published.
Three Things to Watch For
A long wait for checks in a small community makes people easy to reach and eager for news:
“Pay a fee to release your Holian check”
Fees and administration costs are taken out of the fund before distribution. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to receive your share — not by card, wire, gift card or payment app.
“Late filing” offers
The claim deadline was October 13, 2025. A website or caller offering to file a new Holian claim now, or to move you up the payment list, cannot do what it promises.

Holian Settlement — Questions People Actually Ask
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this case.
What is the Holian settlement payout date?
There is no official date as of October 15, 2026. The administrator says it has substantially completed claim review and expects to begin distribution soon, and will post updates on holiansettlement.com. Earlier estimates (first quarter, then second quarter of 2026) were missed.
How long after a class action settlement do I get paid?
It varies, and this case shows why. The Holian settlement got final approval on October 23, 2025; nearly a year later, the administrator was still verifying thousands of claims and supporting documents before it could pay anyone.
How can I track my settlement check?
Contact the administrator directly: 866-654-3125 toll free, HolianSettlement@noticeadministrator.com, or Holian Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 2009, Chanhassen, MN 55317-2009. Do not call the court — the notice says the clerk cannot answer questions about the case. Keep your mailing address current with the administrator.
How much will I get from the Holian settlement?
The agreement projected an average of more than $500 if the same number of people were approved as in the Chemtool settlement. With more than 5,000 claims, individual amounts depend on ownership, distance from the plant, property type and household size.
I was paid in the Chemtool settlement. Do I need to do anything?
No. If your Chemtool claim was approved, it was automatically treated as a Holian claim. The administrator says class members do not need to take any action while distribution is prepared.
Can I still file a Holian claim?
No. The claim deadline was October 13, 2025. According to the Rockton-Roscoe News, the administrator said new claimants who are denied will be notified by mail and given a chance to fix their claim.
Is the Holian settlement the same as the Chemtool settlement?
No. They come from the same fire and the same case, but they are separate settlements. Chemtool paid $94.5 million, already distributed; Holian is paying $5.5 million. New Holian claimants receive nothing from the Chemtool fund.
What class action settlements are paying out soon?
This page covers only the Holian Chemtool fire settlement. For other cases with open claims or upcoming payments, see our list of open class action settlements.
