The Two Breaches Behind the Search
Ascension / Sacred Heart. Ascension, the St. Louis-based chain that ran 140 hospitals in 19 states, was hit by ransomware on May 8, 2024. Its Pensacola-based Sacred Heart hospitals in the western Panhandle stayed open but switched to paper records. Ascension later said a worker accidentally downloaded a malicious file. Its filing with the Maine Attorney General counts 5,599,699 people; exposed data could include medical, payment and insurance details and government ID numbers, including Social Security numbers. The lawsuits allege Ascension failed to protect that data.
Community Health Northwest Florida (CHNF). The Pensacola clinic network, legally Escambia Community Clinics, Inc., detected suspicious activity on December 24, 2024. Its notice dated January 26, 2026 says an unauthorized party accessed files that included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account and card numbers, medical record numbers, medical information and health insurance information.
The Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach, owned by USA Today Co., formerly Gannett) covers Destin and southern Okaloosa County. Nothing we found shows that the paper's own subscriber data was involved in either breach.
Case details
Ascension: the lead case is Negron v. Ascension Health, No. 4:24-cv-00669-JAR, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, before Judge John A. Ross. It was filed on May 14, 2024, and fourteen cases over the same breach are consolidated into it, including Coton v. Ascension Health, No. 4:25-cv-00072. It is a consolidated federal case, not an MDL.
CHNF: as of October 2026 we found law-firm investigations, but no filed complaint, in the federal court records available to us. State-court filings were not checked.
Status as of October 2026: No Settlement in Either Case
CHNF: no lawsuit we could confirm. Firms including Strauss Borrelli and ClassAction.org-affiliated attorneys announced investigations in January 2026. An investigation is a recruitment step, not a case. For either breach there is no settlement, no fund, no administrator, no claim form and no deadline.
Are You Affected?
Your mail is the test. Ascension began mailing notice letters on December 19, 2024. CHNF began mailing on January 26, 2026, after finalizing its list on January 19, 2026. Keep any letter: it lists the data fields involved and proves you were on the notification list.
No CHNF letter but you were a patient or employee? CHNF says you can call its assistance line at 1-833-580-0425 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, weekdays) and ask. Treatment at a Sacred Heart hospital in 2024 alone does not prove your record was in the Ascension files; the letter does.
Being a Destin Log or Daily News subscriber does not, by itself, put you in either group.
Is There Money?
If either case settles, hospital-breach deals usually pay documented out-of-pocket losses plus a smaller flat amount, and a class of 5.6 million people divides any fund thinly. Our data breach settlement calculator shows how those pieces add up.

Three Things to Watch For
Two local breaches, Social Security numbers in both, and no claim form anywhere. That gap draws imposters:
“Claim your Ascension or Sacred Heart settlement”
As of October 2026 there is no Ascension settlement and no claims site. A page asking for your Social Security number or a fee to “reserve your payment” is collecting data, not filing a claim.
Calls claiming to be from CHNF or a clinic
CHNF's own notice gives one number: 1-833-580-0425. If someone calls you about the breach, hang up and call that line yourself. Don't confirm your details to an incoming caller.
Fake “newspaper breach” notices
We found no breach notice from the Destin Log or the Daily News. An email that says your newspaper subscription data was leaked and asks you to log in or pay is phishing until the publisher confirms it on its own site.
