Valsartan Lawsuit: A Small Settlement Approved, the Cancer Cases Still Open

Two different things are in the news under one name. The valsartan settlement people are seeing is a narrow refund deal with one manufacturer, Hetero, covering pills sold between May 1, 2018 and July 31, 2018 — the claim deadline was June 2, 2026 and the court gave final approval on July 6, 2026. The larger valsartan lawsuit — the federal MDL over contaminated blood-pressure pills, including the cancer claims — has no settlement. As of October 1, 2026 it still had 1,426 pending cases.

What the Lawsuits Say Happened
Valsartan is a generic blood-pressure drug. In July 2018 it was recalled after nitrosamine impurities were found in the active ingredient supplied by several overseas manufacturers. The lawsuits allege that valsartan-containing drugs contained NDMA and NDEA, nitrosamines classed as probable human carcinogens, and that manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies sold them anyway. The same MDL also covers losartan and irbesartan.
There are three kinds of claims. Economic-loss claims say patients and health plans paid for drugs that were not what they were sold as. Medical-monitoring claims ask for cancer screening. Personal-injury claims allege the contamination caused specific cancers. The defendants deny wrongdoing and deny that the impurity levels could cause cancer.
Case Details
All federal cases are consolidated as In re: Valsartan, Losartan, and Irbesartan Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2875, Case No. 1:19-md-02875, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The MDL was created on February 14, 2019 and is now before Chief Judge Renee M. Bumb. Per the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s report of October 1, 2026, 1,426 actions are pending out of 1,649 filed over the life of the MDL.
The official settlement website is SartanMedicationSettlement.com. A separate court-approved site, ValsartanMedicationLawsuit.com, covers the certified litigation classes that have not settled.
Status: Three Small Settlements Approved, Main Case Unresolved
Not settled: the economic-loss and medical-monitoring classes against the other manufacturers, and every personal-injury (cancer) claim. In the first cancer bellwether, the court excluded the plaintiff’s causation expert and granted summary judgment to the manufacturers on November 10, 2025. Teva’s quarterly filing for the period ended June 30, 2026 says further bellwether trials are expected no earlier than the first half of 2027.

Who Can Get Money From the Valsartan Settlement
Hetero valsartan settlement: individuals and third-party payors in the U.S. who paid any amount for retail purchases of valsartan made with Hetero “Process III” active ingredient, sold from May 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018. The Hetero defendants include Camber Pharmaceuticals, so the Camber name may appear on your pharmacy record. People with personal-injury claims are excluded from this class. The claim deadline was June 2, 2026, so a claim can no longer be filed.
Certified litigation classes (unsettled): the consumer class covers people who paid for a valsartan-containing drug from any defendant from at least January 1, 2012 through the final recall as of November 10, 2021. A medical-monitoring class covers people who took enough contaminated valsartan to cross a lifetime exposure threshold. The opt-out deadline for those classes was January 31, 2024. If you did nothing, you are still in them — but there is no money, because there is no settlement or judgment.
What the Valsartan Settlement Actually Pays
Payments are made only after the effective date in the settlement agreement, and the settlement site warns the process can take time. None of this compensates cancer. The settlement releases exclude personal-injury and medical-monitoring claims. For those, there is no settlement, no fund and no claim form as of October 2026.
How cases like this one end
Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 166,050 health care/pharmaceutical product liability casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2025:
- 34.5% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 17.9% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 34.5% and 52.4%.
- 9% were decided on a motion before any trial.
- 1 in 2,863 reached a trial (0%), after a median of 32 months.
- Median time from filing to the end of the case: 26.3 months.
- Almost none record a money award in this data (18 of 166,050), and the recorded figures are capped, so we do not publish an average.

Three Valsartan Scams to Watch For
A closed claim window, an unsettled cancer case and a well-known recall are the ingredients imposters use:
“Late claim” or “claim reactivation” offers
The Hetero claim deadline was June 2, 2026. Anyone offering to file or “reopen” a valsartan settlement claim for a fee is selling something that does not exist. Check only with the administrator at 1-866-875-9644 or the official site.
“Your valsartan cancer settlement is ready”
There is no settlement of any valsartan cancer claim. A call, text or letter saying a cancer payout is waiting and asking for a processing fee, bank login or Social Security number is a scam.
Look-alike settlement websites
The real site is SartanMedicationSettlement.com, and the administrator’s mailing address is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The administrator may ask for pharmacy proof of purchase, but never charges a fee to be paid.
Valsartan Lawsuit — Questions People Actually Ask
Is there a valsartan settlement I can still claim?
No. The Hetero valsartan settlement (and the related Aurobindo irbesartan and Vivimed losartan settlements) closed to claims on June 2, 2026. If you filed on time, your claim is with the administrator; final approval was granted, and payments follow the settlement’s effective date.
How much will I get from the valsartan settlement?
Generally no more than $40 per 30-day supply and no more than $120 in total, unless you documented a higher out-of-pocket cost. If too many consumers claim, payments are reduced pro rata because consumers share at most 40% of the net fund.
When will valsartan settlement payments arrive?
The settlement site says payments are distributed after the effective date in the settlement agreement and any timeline in the final approval order, and asks claimants to be patient. As of October 2026 it had not posted a payment date.
I took valsartan and got cancer. Is there a settlement for me?
No. No cancer claim in the valsartan lawsuit has settled, and the Hetero settlement expressly does not cover personal injury. The first cancer bellwether ended in summary judgment for the manufacturers on November 10, 2025. Per Teva’s filing for the period ended June 30, 2026, further bellwether trials are expected no earlier than the first half of 2027.
How do I know if my valsartan was from Hetero?
The Hetero defendants include Camber Pharmaceuticals, so look for Hetero or Camber on your bottle or pharmacy record. The class covers only Process III product sold from May 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018. Your pharmacy can usually tell you which manufacturer supplied each fill.
Am I part of the bigger valsartan class action?
If you paid for a valsartan-containing drug from a defendant between January 1, 2012 and the final recall in November 2021 and did not opt out by January 31, 2024, you are likely in the certified consumer class. That class has no settlement or judgment, so no money is available from it.
Can I still file my own valsartan lawsuit?
Possibly, but deadlines (statutes of limitations) vary by state and may already have run for a 2018 recall. Teva reports that state-court valsartan cases are stayed except one in New Jersey. Talk to a licensed attorney about your situation.
Should I stop taking valsartan?
Do not stop a blood-pressure medicine on your own. The recalls targeted specific lots and manufacturers. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether your current supply is affected.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
