'The Check Is in the Mail' — Officially, This Time: Wells Fargo's $56.85M CARES Act Checks Must Go Out by August 31, and Nobody Has Named the Amount
The administrator's site now commits to a date: every class member's check from the $56.85 million forbearance settlement mails 'by the end of August 2026.' There is no claim form, no portal, and — conspicuously — no official dollar figure. Who's in, what the pro-rata math suggests, and the one phrase that should make you hang up the phone.

A hard date from the official site
The question driving searches right now — how much is the Wells Fargo settlement check per person? — has a frustrating official answer: nobody has published a number. But the timing is now concrete. The administrator's site, CaresActLitigation.com, states it “will mail a check to each Class Member for their pro rata share of the Net Settlement Fund by the end of August 2026.” The Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, approved the settlement on June 10, 2026.
That makes the next three weeks the delivery window — for a settlement whose hearing many aggregator sites still describe as upcoming on “April 17.” On payout timing, the administrator's page is the only one that reliably updates.
Who gets a check — automatically
The class is California-specific, defined by three conditions that must all apply: you had a Wells Fargo mortgage on a California property; you entered a CARES Act forbearance after March 27, 2020 while current on your payments; and Wells Fargo reported the account to credit bureaus as “in forbearance” rather than current. The suit alleged that reporting choice penalized borrowers for doing exactly what the CARES Act invited them to do.
There is nothing to file. The administrator, A.B. Data, identifies class members from Wells Fargo's own records and mails checks to the address on file. That doubles as scam armor: anyone who calls, texts or emails asking you to “register,” “verify your banking details” or pay a fee to release your Wells Fargo settlement check is not the administrator. The legitimate contact is the settlement line, 1-877-307-7268.
Why nobody will name the amount
Payments are pro rata: the $56.85 million fund, minus court-approved attorney fees, costs and administration, divided evenly among verified class members. Settlement trackers put the net fund at roughly $39 million — a figure that appears nowhere on the official site — and independent analyst estimates, which our Wells Fargo CARES Act tracker has carried for months, land at roughly $100–$150 per borrower. The honest framing: that estimate rests on an assumed class size that has never been officially published.
The checks themselves will settle the question — equal pro-rata shares mean the first reported check amount is everyone's check amount. When recipients start posting figures in early September, the estimate gets graded in public.
If your mailbox stays empty in September
Three unglamorous failure modes cover most missing checks: you've moved since the mortgage (the check goes to the address in the records A.B. Data pulled), you weren't actually reported “in forbearance” (not every CARES Act forbearance was misreported), or your envelope simply lands late in the window. The administrator's line — 1-877-307-7268 — is the path for address updates and eligibility questions.
And when the check arrives, deposit it promptly: settlement checks carry void-by dates, and unclaimed pro-rata funds are typically redistributed rather than reissued indefinitely. If late September comes and goes with nothing, that's the moment for the phone call — not for a “file a claim” website, because for this settlement, none legitimately exists.
