Wells Fargo Is About to Mail $56.85 Million in Checks — and Most Recipients Expect the Wrong Amount

Final approval is done, and the administrator says checks reach California mailboxes by the end of August. The typical check? Analysts put it at just $100–$150. Here is why the math shrinks — and the one mistake that can cost you yours.

By Settlement Insight Data Desk · July 31, 2026

What is happening

The $56.85 million Wells Fargo CARES Act settlement cleared its last hurdle: the court approved it on June 10, 2026, and the settlement administrator states that checks will be mailed to every class member by the end of August 2026. Payments are automatic — no claim form exists, and anyone offering to 'file' one for you is a scammer.

The class: California mortgagors whose accounts were current, who received a CARES Act forbearance on or after March 27, 2020, and whom Wells Fargo then reported as 'in forbearance' to credit bureaus — the conduct at the center of the Fair Credit Reporting Act lawsuit. Wells Fargo denies wrongdoing.

Why $56,850,000 becomes $150

Settlement math is subtraction first, division second. Attorney fees (typically 25–30%), litigation costs, service awards, and administration come off the top; what remains is divided equally among all class members. Independent analyst estimates put the per-person check at roughly $100–$150, depending on how many Californians ultimately qualify.

That is the recurring anatomy of large class actions: a headline number in the tens of millions, a per-person check that buys dinner. The compensation here was never meant to be life-changing — the case was about forcing accurate credit reporting.

The one mistake that costs people their check

The forbearances date back to 2020–2023. If you have moved since and never updated your address with the administrator (A.B. Data Ltd., 877-307-7268), your check goes to your old address — and settlement checks are typically valid for only 90 days. Uncashed funds can end up redistributed or escheated. Two minutes on the phone now beats a void check in November.
