Wake County, North Carolina, is one of the 100 counties that joined the $26 billion National Opioid Settlement announced in July 2021, and it has since signed on to the Purdue Pharma/Sackler and generic-manufacturer deals. These are settlements between state and local governments and opioid companies, not a class action. On September 24, 2026 the county announced it had awarded more than $750,000 to El Futuro ($213,908), NAMI Wake ($250,000), SouthLight Healthcare ($168,848) and UCA WAVES ($125,000) — $757,756 by our count — for youth prevention and early intervention. The county now puts its total at “approximately $70 million over an 18-year period,” plus a one-time $331,532.88 from McKinsey, under an FY26–FY27 plan of more than $19.4 million. The Purdue/Sackler settlement took effect on May 1, 2026; the state’s CORE-NC schedule says its payment schedule now includes the first projected Purdue-Sackler payment, to be disbursed in FY 26-27. There is no claim form for residents. Official pages: wake.gov/opioidsettlement and ncopioidsettlement.org.

What happened on September 24, 2026

Wake County announced on September 24, 2026 that it “has awarded more than $750,000 in opioid settlement funds to four community partners advancing youth-focused prevention, education and early intervention services.” The four awards, as listed in the county’s release:

  • El Futuro — $213,908 for the Wake County Latino Youth and Family Substance Use Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative.
  • NAMI Wake — $250,000 to expand the Young Minds Collective, which the county calls “an upstream opioid prevention strategy.”
  • SouthLight Healthcare — $168,848 for a Youth Diversion and Early Intervention Program serving youth and young adults ages 12–25 “who may be at risk of substance misuse, overdose or involvement with the justice system.”
  • UCA WAVES — $125,000 for overdose prevention training, peer support and health education for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, including Asian refugees.

Added up, that is $757,756, by our arithmetic. The awards were announced during Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month. They follow a March 3, 2026 vote in which the Board of Commissioners unanimously appropriated “more than $331,500 received through the McKinsey & Co. Opioid Litigation Settlement” and announced a competitive funding opportunity for education, prevention and early intervention. The county says the McKinsey money is more flexible than its main settlement funds, which are “governed by a narrower spending framework.” The September release does not say how much of the $757,756 came from the McKinsey payment and how much from the main funds, and the four awards add up to more than the McKinsey payment alone.

Wake County opioid settlement funds: how much, and where does opioid settlement money come from?

The money comes from companies, not taxpayers. In the county’s words, the settlements “resolve lawsuits against companies accused of fueling the opioid epidemic through manufacturing, marketing, or distributing prescription opioids.” Wake County took part in three groups of deals. First, the National Opioid Settlement, announced in July 2021 as “a historic $26 billion agreement,” which North Carolina and all 100 of its counties joined. Wake County joined in November 2021, and the county said it would get “approximately $67.7 million over 18 years from earlier settlements.” Second, the Purdue Pharma/Sackler settlement, estimated at $6.94 million for Wake County over 15 years. Third, settlements with eight generic opioid manufacturers, estimated at $1.11 million over 10 years. The Board of Commissioners approved those last two in August 2025. Across all of the opioid deals, the North Carolina Department of Justice says it helped negotiate “more than $55 billion in national settlements and bankruptcy resolutions with opioid companies.” Eighty-five percent of North Carolina’s share goes directly to local governments.

The county’s own totals do not match from one release to the next. Its behavioral health page still says about $65.6 million. The March 3 and June 25, 2026 releases say more than $67 million over 18 years, 2022–2038. The August 2025 release said the new deals bring the total to “nearly $76 million” ($75.75 million by our arithmetic). The newest release, on September 24, 2026, says approximately $70 million. We could not find an explanation for the different figures. All of them are projections of payments that are spread out until 2038. The state’s CORE-NC payment schedule, last updated July 23, 2026, now includes “the first projected Purdue-Sackler settlement payment, which will be disbursed in FY 26-27”. We checked again on October 10, 2026 and found no later update. The Purdue/Sackler deal, worth $7.4 billion nationally, took legal effect on May 1, 2026, and North Carolina expects “nearly $150 million.”

Who gets the money, and when

The money goes to the county, and the county spends it through approved plans. It does not go to individual residents. The FY 2026 and 2027 plans, approved by the Board of Commissioners in June 2025, allocate more than $19.4 million: recovery support services $7.7 million, recovery housing support $4 million, evidence-based addiction treatment $2.7 million, early intervention $2 million, addiction treatment for incarcerated people $1.1 million, naloxone distribution $800,000, criminal justice diversion $500,000, collaborative strategic planning $350,000, and education and primary prevention $331,500. The FY 2025 plan, approved April 15, 2024, allocated $7.5 million. In an earlier competitive round, 23 projects at 21 local nonprofits received more than $6.5 million.

The county reports what the money has paid for so far. In FY 2025, settlement dollars provided 4,075 recovery support contacts, 134 free buprenorphine prescriptions and 4,710 naloxone kits. The June 25, 2026 update also pointed to North Carolina’s first mobile opioid treatment program and a newly opened recovery cafe and hub. The county’s overdose figures, citing state health data: 1,974 deaths from 2011 through 2024, 233 in 2023, and an estimated 158 in 2024, “marking a 35% decline from 2023.”

What you can do: services, grants, feedback

If you need help: the settlement money pays for services, not checks. The county sends people to Alliance Health at 800-510-9132 (allianceforaction.org), and to 988 (call or text) for immediate support. Organizations that serve Wake County can request free naloxone through the county’s online request form, “subject to approval by Wake County and availability of funds.”

If you run a nonprofit: grants are awarded through competitive requests for proposals. The county posts them at wake.gov/opioids and wake.gov/opioidsettlement and announces them in its opioid settlement newsletter. If you want a say: the county holds an annual community meeting (the last one was June 24, 2026), accepts applications for its Wake Opioid Settlement Advisory Committee, and answers questions at OpioidSettlement@Wake.gov.

How can I access public records in Wake County, NC? For the opioid money, the county publishes its funding plans, past plans and grant recipients at wake.gov/opioidsettlement. The state’s CORE-NC site, ncopioidsettlement.org, publishes the payment schedule and a Local Government Reporting Hub. For other county records, this page cannot help; contact Wake County government directly.

Real or a scam: there is no Wake County opioid claim for residents

The settlements with opioid companies were made with state and local governments. None of the Wake County or state releases we read describes a way for individual residents to file a claim, and none mentions payments to individuals. A text, call or email that says you are owed “Wake County opioid settlement funds” and asks for a fee, your bank details or your Social Security number does not match anything the county has published. The county’s real contact address ends in @wake.gov (OpioidSettlement@Wake.gov). Its announcements appear on wake.gov, and the state program’s appear on ncopioidsettlement.org.

Where this fits

The September awards are small next to the long-term total. $757,756 is about one percent, by our arithmetic, of the roughly $70 million projected through 2038. But they mark a change in focus: most money in the FY26–FY27 plan goes to treatment, recovery support and housing, and these awards are aimed at children, teens and families “before challenges become crises,” in the words of Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. Two things to watch: when the first Purdue/Sackler money reaches the county during FY 26-27, and whether the county settles on one total. Its releases between August 2025 and September 2026 have given four different figures, from about $65.6 million to nearly $76 million.
