Sony Owes Millions of PlayStation Accounts Money and Almost Nobody Has to File. If You Deleted Your Account, You Have Until August 27.

The PlayStation Store settlement pays automatically — credits land straight in your PSN wallet, no claim form. That design quietly strands one group: anyone whose account no longer exists. Their deadline is buried in FAQ 5, falls nine days from now, and lands seven weeks before the judge even decides whether to approve the deal.

By Settlement Insight Data Desk · August 18, 2026

A settlement that pays you without asking — with one exception

Most settlement coverage exists to tell you how to file a claim. This one is the opposite: for the overwhelming majority of the class, there is nothing to file and nothing to do. The money arrives on its own.

The case is Caccuri, et al. v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, Civil Action No. 21-cv-03361-AMO, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Sony has agreed to pay $7,850,000 to resolve antitrust claims that it overcharged for certain digital PlayStation games after it stopped selling physical game-specific voucher codes at retail.

Per the court-authorized settlement website, the money is “divided among and distributed by SIE to Settlement Class Members' PSN account wallets, pursuant to the Plan of Allocation.” If your PlayStation account is still active, that sentence is the entire process. You will get store credit; you do not need a claim form, an ID, or a lawyer.

The exception is the reason this article exists. A wallet credit requires a wallet. If you deleted your PSN account, or Sony deactivated it, there is nowhere for the automatic payment to go — and the settlement's fix for that has a deadline that is nine days away.

The deadline is real, and it is buried in FAQ 5

Here is the sentence, verbatim from FAQ 5 on the official site:

“The deadline to submit a request for a check is August 27, 2026.”

That deadline appears nowhere on the homepage. We checked: the front page of psndigitalgamessettlement.com describes the case, the class period and the October hearing, and it correctly explains that deactivated-account holders should contact the administrator — but it does not state that doing so has an expiry date. You have to open the FAQ to find out that the door closes on August 27.

That is a genuinely bad combination, because the group affected is the group least likely to be paying attention. Someone who deleted a PlayStation account is, by definition, someone who stopped using PlayStation — and is therefore not reading gaming news, not logged into a console, and not receiving an in-wallet notification. The people who must act are the only people the automatic mechanism cannot reach.

If that is you, the official contact routes are:

  • Phone: (877) 777-9145
  • Email: info@PSNDigitalGamesSettlement.com
  • Mail: PSN Digital Game Settlement, P.O. Box 173046, Milwaukee, WI 53217

The site says you must “provide qualifying purchase information as well as a current address in order to receive monies they may be entitled to under the Settlement.” Practically: what you bought and where to mail the check. If you still have receipt emails from the PlayStation Store, that is your qualifying purchase information — search your inbox for the store's confirmation messages before you call.

You have to act seven weeks before the judge decides

Now the structural oddity, which we have not seen flagged anywhere else.

The Final Approval Hearing is October 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. That is the date the court decides whether the settlement is fair and should take effect at all. The closed-account request deadline is August 27 — seven weeks earlier.

So if your account is deactivated, you are being asked to submit your purchase history and home address before anyone knows whether this settlement will be approved. That is not improper — administrators routinely gather claims ahead of final approval so payments can move quickly afterward — but it inverts the intuition that you can wait and see. Waiting for the hearing means missing the deadline by seven weeks.

Worth noting alongside it: the opt-out and objection deadline was July 2, 2026, and it has passed. If you are in the class, you are bound by the outcome now regardless. The only remaining decision available to you is whether to collect.

Who is actually in the class — and the number we could not verify

The class covers people who “purchased a Digital Game through the PlayStation Store that was previously available through a Game-Specific Voucher” between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023.

That qualifier does a lot of work and is easy to misread. It is not every digital game you ever bought. It is limited to titles that had previously been sold at retail as voucher codes — the practice the lawsuit says Sony ended in order to raise digital prices. Secondary coverage lists examples such as The Last of Us and Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, but the authoritative list is the Plan of Allocation, not a news article.

Two widely repeated figures deserve a flag, because we could not confirm either at the source. Aggregators have converged on “up to $33.66 per account” and a class of “approximately 4.4 million accounts.” Neither number appears on the official settlement website — not on the homepage, not in the FAQ we retrieved. The site publishes the $7,850,000 total and nothing per-account.

We are stating that plainly rather than repeating the figure as fact. $33.66 may well be right — it likely comes from the Plan of Allocation or a filed declaration — but a per-account estimate that survives only in secondary coverage is exactly the kind of number that mutates as it gets copied. Since payment is pro rata out of a fixed fund, the actual amount depends on the allocation formula and how many qualifying purchases each account made. Treat $33.66 as a ceiling someone reported, not as what will appear in your wallet.

What to do before August 27

If your PSN account is active: nothing. Do not respond to anyone who tells you otherwise. There is no claim form for this settlement, which means every “file your PlayStation settlement claim here” page is either mistaken or fishing. Your credit will appear in your wallet after final approval.

If your PSN account is closed or deactivated and you bought digital games between April 2019 and December 2023: contact the administrator this week at (877) 777-9145 or info@PSNDigitalGamesSettlement.com. Have your purchase details and a current mailing address ready. The deadline is August 27, 2026, and unlike the automatic credit, this one is genuinely all-or-nothing.

If you are not sure whether your old account still exists: treat it as closed and call. There is no penalty for asking, and the automatic mechanism will simply pay you anyway if the account turns out to be live.

  • Source: psndigitalgamessettlement.com — court-authorized settlement website, homepage and FAQ page retrieved August 18, 2026. Verbatim FAQ 5: “The deadline to submit a request for a check is August 27, 2026.” FAQ 5 also describes distribution: funds “divided among and distributed by SIE to Settlement Class Members’ PSN account wallets, pursuant to the Plan of Allocation,” and states that holders of deactivated PSN accounts “will be able to contact the case toll-free number (877) 777-9145, email info@PSNDigitalGamesSettlement.com, and/or mail to PSN Digital Game Settlement, P.O. Box 173046, Milwaukee, WI 53217 and provide qualifying purchase information as well as a current address in order to receive monies they may be entitled to under the Settlement.” Homepage source of the case caption, the $7,850,000 amount, the class definition (“purchased a Digital Game through the PlayStation Store that was previously available through a Game-Specific Voucher”), the April 1, 2019 – December 31, 2023 period, the July 2, 2026 opt-out/objection deadline and the October 15, 2026, 2:00 p.m. Final Approval Hearing.
  • Source: Verified absence: the August 27, 2026 deadline does not appear on the settlement website’s homepage — only in FAQ 5. Stated here because the affected group (deactivated-account holders) receives no in-wallet notice and is unlikely to open the FAQ.
  • Source: Verified absence: neither a per-account payment figure nor a class-member count appears on the official settlement website’s homepage or FAQ as retrieved on August 18, 2026. The “up to $33.66 per PSN account” and “~4.4 million accounts” figures circulating in secondary coverage (openclassactions.com, topclassactions.com and others) could not be confirmed against the administrator’s own materials and are reported here as unverified, not as fact.
  • Source: Administrator identified as AB Data from the settlement website’s footer and corroborating secondary coverage; the site does not state the administrator’s full legal name on the pages retrieved.
  • Source: Example game titles (The Last of Us, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China) come from secondary coverage only. The authoritative scope is the Plan of Allocation, which is not reproduced on the public pages retrieved; readers with a borderline purchase should call the administrator rather than rely on any published title list.
