Rivian Recall Check: The First Recall Limited to the New R2 Covers 14 Vehicles, the Rearview-Camera Recall Covers 98,828 — and NHTSA Says Their VINs Become Searchable Only on November 9 and November 28

Does this affect you?

AI Legal Assistant · free · answers in seconds · general information, not legal advice

Two new Rivian recalls reached the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s database in September 2026. 26V597000 (report dated September 16) covers 98,828 R1S, R1T and R2 vehicles whose rearview camera image “may be obstructed by a notification when in reverse”; Rivian has released a free over-the-air software update. 26V625000 (September 29) is the first recall limited to the 2027 R2: 14 vehicles with a high-voltage battery fastener that “may have been improperly tightened, causing a loss of drive power.” NHTSA’s summaries say the affected VINs become searchable on its website on November 9 and November 28, 2026 — so a VIN check today may not list a vehicle that is included. A recall is a free repair, not a settlement payment.

Rivian Recall Check: The First Recall Limited to the New R2 Covers 14 Vehicles, the Rearview-Camera Recall Covers 98,828 — and NHTSA Says Their VINs Become Searchable Only on November 9 and November 28 — key figures at a glance

The two September recalls, in NHTSA’s words

Rearview camera, 26V597000. NHTSA’s summary: “Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T, and 2027 R2 vehicles. The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, ‘Rear Visibility.’” The risk: “An obstructed rearview camera image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.” The fix: “Rivian has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge.” NHTSA lists 98,828 potentially affected vehicles. Owner letters are expected to be mailed on November 9, 2026; Rivian’s own number for this recall is FSAM-1866.

R2 battery fastener, 26V625000. “Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2027 R2 vehicles. A high voltage battery fastener may have been improperly tightened, causing a loss of drive power.” The risk: “A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.” The fix is not over the air: “Rivian will inspect and repair the connection or replace damaged components as necessary, free of charge.” NHTSA lists 14 affected vehicles. Owner letters are expected on November 28, 2026; Rivian’s number is FSAM-1888. The R2 was already included in the camera recall 13 days earlier, so this is the first recall that covers the R2 alone.

How to check your Rivian today

NHTSA’s VIN search is the usual first stop, but its own summaries say the VINs for these two recalls “will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 9, 2026” (camera) and “will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 28, 2026” (R2). Until then, an empty VIN result does not prove your vehicle is outside the recall.

What works now:

  • Search NHTSA by year, make and model instead of VIN. We ran that search through NHTSA’s recall data on October 3, 2026: both September campaigns already appear for the model years they cover.
  • Call Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261 and give the recall number (FSAM-1866 for the camera, FSAM-1888 for the R2 fastener).
  • For the camera recall, the remedy is a software update. NHTSA says Rivian has released it over the air, free of charge; installing that update is the fix.

Owners of 2027 R2s in the 14-vehicle recall should not expect an over-the-air fix: that one needs an inspection, and NHTSA describes the consequence as a possible loss of drive power.

Every Rivian recall in NHTSA’s database dated 2026

NHTSA’s recall data lists five Rivian campaigns with 2026 report dates as of October 3, 2026:

  • 26V003000 (January 5) — 19,641 2022–2025 R1S and R1T that had service before March 10, 2025: the rear toe link “may have been reassembled incorrectly” and the joint may separate. Rivian replaces the toe link bolts; owner letters were mailed February 17, 2026.
  • 26V009000 (January 15) — 869 R1S and R1T: bolts securing the second-row seat belt retractors “may be improperly tightened.” Rivian inspects and tightens them; letters were mailed March 2, 2026.
  • 26V508000 (August 6) — 3,829 2025–2026 R1S and R1T: one or both front turn signals may fail to illuminate and flash. Rivian inspects and replaces them; letters were mailed September 28, 2026. NHTSA calls it an expansion of recall 25V387000, which covered 27,882 vehicles in 2025.
  • 26V597000 (September 16) — 98,828 R1S, R1T and R2: rearview camera image obstructed by a notification; over-the-air update.
  • 26V625000 (September 29) — 14 2027 R2: high-voltage battery fastener; inspection and repair.

Added up, that is 123,181 vehicle entries across 2026 recalls (our arithmetic). It is not the number of different vehicles: the same R1S or R1T can be in several of these campaigns.

A recall is a free repair, not a payout

People searching for a Rivian recall often also look for money. Every one of the NHTSA summaries above describes the remedy as free of charge, and none of them mentions reimbursement or a payment to owners. A recall obliges the manufacturer to fix the defect; it does not, by itself, create a settlement or a claim form. Compensation would require a separate lawsuit or program, and the recall records say nothing about one.

The camera problem is not unique to Rivian: Stellantis announced a recall of 955,085 vehicles worldwide in August 2026 over a radio software fault that can leave the rearview camera screen blank, a symptom covered by the same rear-visibility standard (FMVSS 111) — see our Stellantis rearview camera recall page. For other electric vehicles, our Tesla recall check walks through the same VIN-and-model search.
