The Lyft Settlement Papers Are Out: Angeion Group Will Pay California Drivers by Miles Driven, Payments Will Come With a 1099, and Lyft Owes Only $30 Million in the First 14 Days After the Judge Signs

Uber Technologies Wage and Hour Cases, Case No. CJC-21-005179 (Judicial Council Coordination Proceeding No. 5179), Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, Judge Ethan P. Schulman. The full stipulated judgment and settlement agreement behind the $272,500,000 Lyft deal, dated September 30, 2026 and posted by the California Attorney General, fills in what the October 1 announcements left out: the administrator is Angeion Group; drivers’ shares are set by P2 and P3 miles (driving to a pickup and driving the rider), doubled for the more than 1,600 drivers who filed wage claims; payments are “non-wages” reported on IRS Form 1099; and Lyft pays $120,000,000 in the first year after the judgment is entered and the remaining $152,500,000 in quarterly installments that can run through 2030. As of October 18, 2026, we found no report that the judge has signed it, and there is no claim form.

The Lyft Settlement Papers Are Out: Angeion Group Will Pay California Drivers by Miles Driven, Payments Will Come With a 1099, and Lyft Owes Only $30 Million in the First 14 Days After the Judge Signs — key figures at a glance

What the settlement agreement adds: an administrator, a formula and a payment clock

When the Attorney General, the Labor Commissioner and the City Attorneys of San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego announced the Lyft settlement on October 1, 2026, the releases said a “third-party settlement administrator” would contact drivers, without naming one. The 40-page stipulated judgment and settlement agreement the Attorney General posted with the release does name it: “Plaintiffs, with agreement from Lyft, have selected Angeion Group as the Settlement Administrator.”

The papers are a stipulation, signed for the state, the cities, the Labor Commissioner, the two private PAGA plaintiffs and Lyft on September 30, 2026, plus a proposed final judgment with a blank signature line for Judge Ethan P. Schulman of San Francisco Superior Court, who oversees the coordinated Uber Technologies Wage and Hour Cases (No. CJC-21-005179). Nothing moves until he signs. The agreement defines the start date for everything — the “Effective Date” — as “the date the Court enters the Stipulated Judgment,” and says that if approval is not given the deal “shall automatically be deemed null and void ab initio.” As of October 18, 2026, we found no report of a signed judgment or a hearing date; an October 13 Associated Press-distributed story still said “the settlement must still be approved by the court.”

The short answer for drivers: if you gave at least one Lyft ride that started or ended in California between April 5, 2016 and December 15, 2020, you are a “Covered Driver.” You do not file anything now. Lyft hands your contact details and your weekly hours and miles to Angeion, and Angeion contacts eligible drivers.

How much is a misclassification lawsuit worth? Here, it depends on your miles

The Attorney General said compensation “will be based on the number of hours and miles driven.” The agreement splits those two jobs. Hours decide whether you are paid at all: an “Eligible Driver” must meet “a minimum number of hours based on total P2 and P3 hours of driving,” a threshold “to be determined by the People and LCO after Lyft provides the data.” That minimum has not been published. Miles decide how much: eligible drivers “shall receive a share proportional to their total P2 and P3 miles driven during the Relevant Period.” P2 is the time from accepting a ride to reaching the rider; P3 is the time with the rider in the car. Miles driven with the app on but no ride accepted are not part of the formula.

The pot those miles divide, after the deductions in the agreement:

  • $272,500,000 gross fund.
  • Minus $20,437,500 (7.5%) in civil penalties, split equally among the Attorney General and the three City Attorneys.
  • Minus $14,987,500 (5.5%) in attorneys’ fees and costs for the PAGA plaintiffs’ lawyers, and service awards of “up to $20,000 each” for the two PAGA plaintiffs, if the court approves them.
  • That leaves a Driver Compensation Fund the agreement puts at “at least $237,031,500” — $43,500 less than the $237,075,000 in the Attorney General’s release. The agreement defines the fund as what is left after the penalties, the PAGA fees, the PAGA plaintiffs’ service awards and any administration-cost overruns paid out of the account, so those last two items presumably account for the difference, but the agreement does not itemize it. Interest Lyft pays after the first year, and interest earned in the account, are added to it.
  • First, $5,450,000 (2% of the gross fund) goes to the “Berman Claimants” — drivers who had wage claims pending with the Labor Commissioner — “in amounts determined by the LCO.” Berman Claimants are also counted at “twice their total P2 and P3 miles” in the main split.

By our arithmetic, about $231,581,500 is left for the mileage-based shares before interest. Neither the agreement nor the press releases say how many drivers qualify or give a per-mile rate, so nobody can honestly quote you a dollar figure. One outside benchmark: Rideshare Drivers United told CalMatters the settlement falls short of the $434 million in claims it filed for about 1,900 Lyft drivers.

What are the damages for misclassification of employees in California? In this case the Labor Commissioner alleged drivers were denied “minimum wages and overtime, rest-break premiums, reimbursement for business expenses, accurate wage statements, timely wage payments, paid sick leave and other protections.” The settlement does not price those items one by one; for tax reporting it labels the whole driver fund “restitution or remediation, in the form of business expense reimbursements.”

When the money moves: $120 million in year one, the rest through 2030

The agreement sets a payment schedule keyed to the day Judge Schulman enters the judgment:

  1. $30,000,000 within 14 days after the Effective Date.
  2. $30,000,000 within 90 days after that first payment is due.
  3. $20,000,000 each within 180, 270 and 360 days after the first payment is due — $120,000,000 in year one, interest-free for Lyft.
  4. The remaining $152,500,000 over the following three years, in quarterly installments of at least $12,708,333.33, starting on the later of March 31, 2028 or 455 days after the first payment is due, with 5% simple interest (1.25% per quarter) on the unpaid balance. Lyft can pay faster “without penalty.” The agreement’s own example schedule runs from the first quarter of 2028 to the fourth quarter of 2030; its twelve interest payments add up to $12,390,625 by our count, which matches the $12.4 million interest cap in Lyft’s SEC filing.

Two rules sit on top of that. Money paid in stays in escrow for an “Initial Hold Period” of 60 days after the Effective Date (longer if anyone appeals); only then does Angeion “begin issuing payments when directed by Plaintiffs.” And the state and the Labor Commissioner “retain sole discretion to determine the payment schedule” — one payment or several. If there is more than one, the Berman Claimants’ $5.45 million goes out in the first. In plain terms: no driver is paid sooner than about two months after the judge signs, and if the state waits for most of the money, the bulk of it would not be in the account before 2028.

The data handover has its own date. Lyft must give Angeion each driver’s ID, name, Social Security number “(to the extent known),” mailing address, email, cell phone and weekly P2 and P3 hours and miles “within 75 days of August 12, 2026, or a longer period if mutually agreed” — by our count, by October 26, 2026.

Payments will be taxable paperwork: they “will be considered non-wages for which the Settlement Administrator shall issue IRS Form 1099s, to the extent required by law,” and drivers “will be responsible for paying any and all applicable taxes.” Money that cannot be delivered after repeated attempts does not go back to Lyft — this is a “non-reversionary” fund — but is redistributed “at the People’s and the LCO’s discretion.”

Is a message about the Lyft settlement real?

The agreement tells you what a genuine contact will look like. Angeion is to run a website, approved by the plaintiffs’ lawyers, with “a means by which Eligible Drivers may update their contact information or provide any information needed for payment” and “a means by which drivers who have used the Lyft platform may check their eligibility for a payment,” plus an email inbox “monitored daily” and a call center “staffed by knowledgeable human beings” with “language access to drivers calling in languages other than English.” Lyft also pays up to $1,250,000 of Angeion’s costs on top of the fund; Angeion estimated its costs at about $970,400. Nothing in the agreement charges drivers a fee.

As of October 18, 2026, we found no Angeion website, phone number or email address for this settlement, and the Attorney General says it will publish those details “in the near future.” Until a site is linked from oag.ca.gov or dir.ca.gov, treat any “Lyft settlement” page or text asking for your Social Security number, bank details or a processing fee with suspicion. Because Angeion receives contact and tax data straight from Lyft, a real notice should already know who you are. The Labor Commissioner’s line, 1-833-LCO-INFO (833-526-4636), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days, takes questions about labor law; it is not the settlement administrator.

Can I sue my employer for misclassification? What this deal closes off for early Lyft work

For Lyft rides before Prop 22 took effect on December 16, 2020, the state route closes with this deal: the Labor Commissioner “agrees not to assert jurisdiction over wage claims filed by Drivers against Lyft that predate December 16, 2020,” including through the Berman wage-claim process, while stating that she “is releasing her rights and not the individual rights of any third- party workers.” Whether a driver still has a private claim is a question for a lawyer, not this article. If your question is about a different employer, this settlement does not help you; the Labor Commissioner’s Office takes questions about the labor laws it enforces at 1-833-LCO-INFO.

How to prove misclassification of a 1099 employee? Under California’s “ABC test,” adopted in Dynamex in 2018 and written into law by AB 5, the company carries the burden: as Courthouse News summarized it, it “must show it does not directly control the worker, that the work falls outside its usual course of business and that the worker is ‘customarily engaged in an independently established trade.’” For app-based ride and delivery work after December 15, 2020, Prop 22 sets a separate framework, which is why the Labor Commissioner says this settlement does not “provide relief for later work.”

Where this leaves the case — and Uber

The Lyft papers grew out of four lawsuits: the People’s case filed in San Francisco on May 5, 2020 (CGC-20-584402), the Labor Commissioner’s Alameda County case of August 5, 2020 (RG20070283), and PAGA suits by drivers Brandon Olson (CGC-18-566788, filed May 25, 2018) and Million Seifu (BC712959, filed July 5, 2018). The agreement says the trial clock stopped on August 12, 2026, and a term sheet followed on August 18. Lyft denies the allegations; the judgment says the court “has made no determination of liability,” and Lyft’s 8-K says it booked a $210 million accrual for the matter in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Uber is not covered: the agreement “does not apply to or release any claim or allegation made in the JCCP against any of the Uber defendants.” The same coordinated case continues against Uber, and San Diego City Attorney Heather Ferbert told CalMatters it could go to trial if Uber does not come to the table. Our October 2 report covers the announcement and the separate New York Uber and Lyft settlement. We will update when Judge Schulman signs the judgment and Angeion’s site goes live.
