Karen Read Lawsuit: Four Civil Cases, No Settlement

Questions about this case?

AI Legal Assistant · free · answers in seconds · general information, not legal advice

“Karen Read lawsuit” now means four separate civil cases. The O’Keefe family is suing her for wrongful death in Plymouth. She is suing the investigators and trial witnesses in federal court, and the State Police and the Town of Canton in state court. Witnesses are suing her for defamation. None of them is a class action: there is no settlement, no claim form and nothing for the public to join.

Independent information service: Settlement Insight is not the settlement administrator, is not affiliated with or endorsed by the company named above, and is not a law firm. What Each Lawsuit Claims

The wrongful death lawsuit against Karen Read. On August 26, 2024, relatives of Boston police officer John O’Keefe sued Read in Plymouth County Superior Court. The suit alleges she struck him with her SUV in Canton on the night of January 28–29, 2022, and that two bars, C.F. McCarthy’s and Waterfall Bar & Grille, served her alcohol when she was already intoxicated. It also pleads negligent infliction of emotional distress and does not name a dollar figure.

Read’s own suits. A jury acquitted Read of murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene on June 18, 2025, convicting her only of drunken driving. She then went on offense. Her federal case alleges that three State Police investigators and people who were inside the Canton house conspired to frame her; it pleads malicious prosecution, supervisor liability, civil-rights conspiracy, violations of the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. Her second suit, filed June 4, 2026, alleges the State Police and Canton negligently hired, trained and supervised officers whose text messages she says showed bias. Defendants in the federal case dispute the allegations, and Canton disputes the police suit’s characterizations.

Case Details

Wrongful death: pending in Plymouth Superior Court before Judge Mark Gildea. Defendants: Read and the two bars.

Read v. Proctor: No. 1:25-cv-13588 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, before Chief Judge Denise J. Casper. Read first filed it in Bristol Superior Court on November 17, 2025; the witness defendants removed it to federal court, where it was docketed on November 25, 2025. Defendants include former Trooper Michael Proctor, Sgt. Yuriy Bukhenik and Lt. Brian Tully in their personal capacities, five trial witnesses and, in the amended complaint, the Town of Canton.

Police suit: filed in Bristol County Superior Court against the Massachusetts State Police and the Town of Canton.

Defamation: four trial witnesses sued Read and a blogger in Plymouth; Judge Gildea denied the defendants’ anti-SLAPP motions to dismiss.

Status: All Four Cases Pending

As of the latest reporting we found (July 2026), every case is still open and none has settled.

In the wrongful death case, Judge Gildea set August 17, 2026 as the end of discovery and, at a June 2026 hearing, told both sides to “stop pandering to social media.” No trial date has been confirmed in the reporting we reviewed.

In Read v. Proctor, Judge Casper heard Tully’s motion to dismiss and the witnesses’ anti-SLAPP motion on July 14, 2026 and took both under advisement. The public docket mirror we checked shows no ruling after that date. The State Police and Canton suit is at an early stage; Canton said in June 2026 it had not yet been served.

We checked again on October 10, 2026 and found no later update.

There's no claim deadline yet. We'll email you if a settlement opens a claim period.

Who Is Affected

Only the named parties. These are individual lawsuits, not class actions: the plaintiffs are the O’Keefe family, Read herself and four witnesses. No court has certified any class, and there is no group of consumers, residents or taxpayers who can sign up.

If you had your own encounter with the Massachusetts State Police or Canton police, Read’s suits do not cover it. A claim of your own would be a separate case, with its own deadlines under Massachusetts and federal law.

Is Anyone Getting Paid?

No. There is no settlement, no fund, no claim form and no deadline for the public in any Karen Read lawsuit. The wrongful death complaint does not specify damages. Read’s police suit seeks damages for legal fees, lost income, emotional distress and reputational harm, but no court has awarded her anything. Any money in these cases would go to the parties, never to bystanders.

How cases like this one end

Our copy of the federal courts’ own case database covers 182,728 other civil rights casesclosed in U.S. federal district courts between 2015 and 2026, 1.2% of them filed as class actions:

  • •19% ended in a settlement recorded by the court. Another 9.1% were dismissed voluntarily, which often follows a private settlement — so the real settlement share sits between 19% and 28.1%.
  • •15.1% were decided on a motion before any trial.
  • •1 in 63 reached a trial (1.6%), after a median of 31.2 months.
  • •Median time from filing to the end of the case: 7 months.
  • •Only 1,316 of them (0.7%) record a money award at all; the median of those is $248,500.

These are base rates for this type of case (federal other civil rights cases) — not a prediction about this lawsuit, and not legal advice. Source: Federal Judicial Center, Integrated Database (civil), analysed by Settlement Insight. Cases heard in state courts are not included.

Three Things to Watch For

A famous case with no claim form attracts people selling access to it:

“Karen Read settlement” claim pages

There is no settlement and no class. A site asking for your name, address or bank details to “claim your share” of a Karen Read case is collecting data, not filing anything.

“BREAKING: case settled” videos and posts

Channels push dramatic headlines about depositions, verdicts and payouts. A ruling or settlement shows up on the court docket first; check No. 1:25-cv-13588 or the Plymouth court before believing a thumbnail.

“Join the Karen Read lawsuit” pitches

You cannot join her case. If someone says your own run-in with police is “part of” it, they are recruiting for a separate case; read any retainer as the contract it is.

Karen Read Lawsuit — Questions People Actually Ask

What is the Karen Read wrongful death lawsuit about?

The O’Keefe family alleges Read caused John O’Keefe’s death in Canton in January 2022 and that two bars over-served her that night. The wrongful death lawsuit Karen Read faces was filed August 26, 2024 in Plymouth County Superior Court. Her criminal acquittal does not end it: a civil case uses a lower standard of proof.

Is Karen Read suing the police?

Yes, twice. Read v. Proctor (No. 1:25-cv-13588, D. Mass.) targets three State Police investigators and trial witnesses. A second suit, filed June 4, 2026 in Bristol County Superior Court, targets the Massachusetts State Police and the Town of Canton.

What court is Karen Read’s case in?

Her criminal case is over. The civil cases are in three courts: Plymouth Superior Court (wrongful death and defamation), the federal courthouse in Boston (Read v. Proctor) and Bristol County Superior Court (the police suit).

Is there a Karen Read settlement or claim form?

No. In the latest reporting we found (July 2026), none of the four cases has settled, and none is a class action. There is no fund, no administrator and no deadline for the public.

Has the federal judge ruled on the motions to dismiss?

Not in the record we could find. Judge Casper heard the motions on July 14, 2026 and took them under advisement. At the hearing she questioned whether the complaint plausibly alleges that the witnesses initiated the prosecution.

How serious is a civil lawsuit?

A civil case cannot send anyone to prison. It can end in a money judgment, a settlement or a dismissal. That is why Read can be sued for wrongful death after her acquittal, and why her own suits seek damages rather than charges.

Is Karen Read being sued for defamation?

Yes. Four witnesses who testified at her trials sued Read and a blogger in Plymouth. Judge Mark Gildea denied the defendants’ anti-SLAPP motions to dismiss, so the case continues. See our defamation lawsuit guide for how such claims work.

Does any of this affect me?

Only if you are a party. Nobody else is owed anything, and nobody else needs to respond to these cases. For settlements you can actually claim, see our list of open class action settlements.

This page is for general information only and is not legal advice. Lawsuit status, eligibility, and compensation can change. Settlement Insight is not a law firm and does not represent any party. Consult a licensed attorney about your specific situation.

Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?

Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
