What the Lawsuit Alleges
For more than a decade, women have alleged that using Johnson's Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for feminine hygiene caused ovarian cancer, and that Johnson & Johnson knew for decades its talc could contain trace asbestos without warning consumers. J&J denies the allegations and maintains its talc is safe and asbestos-free. The company made three separate attempts to move the litigation into bankruptcy through subsidiaries (LTL Management twice, then Red River Talc). All three were rejected, the last dismissed on March 31, 2025 over improper voting procedures and impermissible third-party releases. J&J then said it would not appeal and would not attempt a fourth bankruptcy filing, returning the claims to the regular court system.

Who Is Affected & Can You Join?
The proposal covers ovarian cancer claims that were already filed. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation counted 68,435 actions pending in MDL 2738 as of July 1, 2026; J&J's own count including state courts is roughly 76,000. Two groups are not covered. Mesothelioma claims are handled separately, and J&J has said it previously resolved the large majority of them. And future claimants are excluded: this agreement applies only to existing cases, a key difference from the failed bankruptcy plans, which tried to bind future claims as well. Someone diagnosed with ovarian cancer today who used talc products would need to file a new individual lawsuit, subject to their state's statute of limitations, typically one to three years from diagnosis.
