Indiana uses the income-shares model: both parents' incomes are combined, the official schedule sets a basic support obligation, and each parent owes their proportional share (Ind. Child Support Rules and Guidelines (Indiana Supreme Court; schedule rev. eff. Jan. 1, 2024)). The calculator above interpolates the official schedule for a quick estimate — health-insurance, child-care, and parenting-time adjustments come on top.

How Indiana Calculates Child Support

Indiana uses the income shares model on a WEEKLY basis: both parents' weekly gross incomes are adjusted and combined, the Guideline Schedules for Weekly Support Payments set the basic obligation for the number of children, and each parent owes their proportional share — further adjusted by the Parenting Time Credit, work-related child care, and health insurance. The guidelines were comprehensively revised effective January 1, 2024.

Statutory basis: Ind. Child Support Rules and Guidelines (Indiana Supreme Court; schedule rev. eff. Jan. 1, 2024). Exact figure: official Indiana calculator.

Official Schedule — Excerpt

Basic support obligation at selected combined incomes (combined weekly gross (adjusted) income), from the official Indiana schedule:

Combined income1 child2 children3 children
$1,000$180$270$338
$1,500$240$360$450
$2,000$274$411$514
$2,500$316$474$593
High-income cases: The printed schedule stops at $4,000 combined weekly adjusted income (≈ $208,000/year). Above it, courts apply the extrapolation formula from the Guideline Commentary instead of the table, with discretion to deviate if the result would be unjust.
Low-income cases: The schedule builds in a low-income adjustment down to a $0.00 obligation at very low incomes and provides no figure below $100/week combined. Indiana sets no fixed minimum; courts weigh the paying parent's income and living expenses so an order does not deny minimum subsistence, with written findings for departures.

Worked Example

Two children, combined weekly adjusted income $1,500 (paying parent $900 = 60%, other parent $600 = 40%). Schedule amount for two children at $1,500 = $360/week. The paying parent's share is 60% × $360 = $216/week — before the Parenting Time Credit (based on annual overnights) and add-ons for child care and health insurance on the Child Support Obligation Worksheet.

When Courts Deviate From the Guideline

  • Combined income above the $4,000/week schedule top where the high-income formula would be unjust
  • Extraordinarily low income that would deny the paying parent minimum subsistence self-support
  • Parents directly sharing the child's controlled expenses (clothing, school costs, activities) between households
  • A significant ongoing difference between actual overnights and the schedule used for the Parenting Time Credit
  • Extraordinary health-care or educational expenses not captured by the basic obligation

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Indiana calculate child support?

Income shares on a weekly basis: combined weekly adjusted income → Guideline Schedule basic obligation → split by each parent's income share → finalized on the Child Support Obligation Worksheet, which every case must file.

What is the Indiana Parenting Time Credit?

A credit that reduces the paying parent's obligation for the household expenses they already cover directly during overnights. It is computed on the separate Parenting Time Credit Worksheet from annual overnights — since the 2024 revision with a more detailed method when schedules vary between children.

Is there a minimum child support amount in Indiana?

No fixed minimum. At very low combined incomes the schedule shows $0.00, and courts are instructed to preserve the paying parent's minimum subsistence-level self-support.

What happens if combined weekly income is above $4,000?

The printed schedule ends there (≈ $208,000/year). Courts apply the extrapolation formula from the Guideline Commentary and may deviate if the result would be unjust for the child's needs and standard of living.

How often does Indiana update its guidelines?

The Judicial Conference reviews them every four years with public comment before Supreme Court approval. The most recent comprehensive revision — a new weekly schedule and removal of the old 6% cash-medical rule — took effect January 1, 2024.
