GMC Class Action Lawsuit: Which Case Is Yours, and Is There Money?

There is no single “GMC lawsuit.” GMC is a General Motors brand, so every case is filed against GM and usually covers Chevrolet and Cadillac too. The one in the news now is the 6.2L V8 L87 engine class action over 2019–2024 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2021–2024 Yukon and Yukon XL: GM asked the court to dismiss it on June 8, 2026, and as of October 2026 there is no settlement and no claim form. The GMC settlements that did pay money — the 5.3L oil-consumption case and the Duramax fuel pump case — are closed to new claims.

What the Main GMC Lawsuit Says
The case drawing the searches is Powell v. General Motors, LLC. According to the complaint, filed for 44 current and former owners, the 6.2-liter V8 EcoTec3 L87 engine in about 600,000 trucks and SUVs has a “defective design that causes insufficient lubrication between the bearings and the crankshaft.” The lawsuit alleges this leads to spun bearings, broken connecting rods, loss of propulsion and engine failure. GMC models named: 2019–2024 Sierra 1500, 2021–2024 Yukon and Yukon XL; the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban and Cadillac Escalade are in it as well.
GM disputes this. In its motion to dismiss it says the cause is two supplier manufacturing problems — sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft oil galleries, and out-of-spec crankshafts — affecting about 3% of engines, not a design defect. It also argues the claims are moot because the NHTSA-supervised recall already fixes the problem.
Case Details
L87 engine: Powell et al. v. General Motors, LLC, Case No. 4:25-cv-10479-SDK-KGA, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. At least 11 class actions were filed over the L87 engine; Powell is the case GM asked to dismiss. Plaintiffs' firms include DiCello Levitt, Hagens Berman, Lieff Cabraser and The Miller Law Firm.
8-speed transmission: Speerly v. General Motors, LLC. On June 27, 2025 the Sixth Circuit, sitting en banc (No. 23-1940), vacated certification of 26 state subclasses covering roughly 800,000 buyers of 2015–2019 GM vehicles with first-generation 8L eight-speed transmissions and sent the case back to the district court.
Valve lifters: Harrison v. General Motors LLC, Eastern District of Michigan, before Judge Laurie J. Michelson, covering GMC Sierra and Yukon models with AFM or DFM V8 engines. The judge refused to split the case in two in 2026; no class has been certified.
Status: No Open GMC Claim Form
L87 engine (active): GM filed its motion to dismiss on June 8, 2026. No class has been certified and no settlement has been announced. The recall is the remedy that exists today: NHTSA campaign 25V274 (GM number N252494000) covers 597,571 vehicles, including 2021–2024 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL with the 6.2L V8. Dealers inspect the engine and replace it free if it does not pass the inspection; GM added a 10-year/150,000-mile engine warranty extension.
8-speed transmission (active): GM's quarterly report for the period ending June 30, 2026 lists one putative and one certified class action over 2015–2022 vehicles. The 2020–2022 case “has not yet addressed class certification.” No settlement.
OnStar driving data (active MDL): covered on our GM data privacy lawsuit page. No consumer settlement.
Closed GMC settlements: the $150 million 5.3L LC9 engine settlement is paying out, and the Duramax fuel pump settlement issued payments on March 23 and August 31, 2026. Neither accepts new claims.

Which GMC Case Covers Your Vehicle
Match your truck or SUV, not the brand name:
2019–2024 Sierra 1500, 2021–2024 Yukon / Yukon XL with the 6.2L V8: the L87 engine case. Nothing to sign up for. First check your VIN for the recall at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call GMC at 1-800-462-8782. The recall covers 2021–2024 models; the lawsuit also names 2019–2020 Sierra 1500 trucks.
2015–2019 GM vehicle with an 8-speed automatic: the Speerly transmission case. The appeals opinion does not list models, so check with the case documents rather than assume your GMC is in it. Class certification was vacated in June 2025, so there is no class to be in right now.
2011–2014 Sierra, Yukon or Yukon XL with the LC9 5.3L, bought in California, Idaho or North Carolina: the Siqueiros settlement. Payment needed no claim form for most members (North Carolina members who received an identification notice had to return it by September 15, 2025); see our GM engine settlement page.
2011–2016 Sierra with the 6.6L Duramax diesel bought from a GM-authorized dealer in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania or Texas: the Chapman fuel pump settlement. Claims closed November 6, 2025.
What a GMC Settlement Pays
The GMC settlements that are real show the range. The Siqueiros 5.3L oil-consumption settlement is a $150,000,000 fund; its administrator advertised a payment of “no less than $2,149” per class member. Payments began December 23, 2025. Reissued checks not cashed by September 24, 2026 go into a second pro rata distribution for members who already cashed theirs. If your GMC engine actually failed, the L87 recall’s free inspection and engine replacement is worth more today than waiting for a lawsuit: keep repair orders and receipts either way.

Three GMC Lawsuit Traps
A recall, a pending lawsuit and two finished settlements in the same truck line make it easy to confuse owners:
“Register for the GMC engine settlement”
There is no L87 settlement. A site asking for your VIN, driver’s license or bank details to “reserve your payout” is collecting leads or data. A real settlement would be announced by a court-appointed administrator.
Paying someone to do the free recall
Recall 25V274 inspection and, if needed, engine replacement are free at GMC dealers. Nobody needs to charge a fee to “get you into” the recall or the extended engine warranty.
Fake check-reissue emails for the 5.3L settlement
Siqueiros payments are real, which makes reissue requests easy to fake. The official site is gmenginelitigation.com; it does not ask for a fee. Type the address yourself instead of clicking a link.
GMC Lawsuit — Questions Owners Ask
Is there a GMC class action lawsuit right now?
Yes, several — all filed against General Motors. The most active GMC lawsuit is Powell v. General Motors over the 6.2L L87 V8 in 2019–2024 Sierra 1500 and 2021–2024 Yukon/Yukon XL. Others concern the 8-speed transmission, AFM/DFM valve lifters and OnStar driving data.
Is there a GMC settlement for the 6.2L L87 engine?
No. As of October 5, 2026, there is no settlement, fund or claim form. GM filed a motion to dismiss on June 8, 2026. What exists is recall 25V274: free inspection and, if needed, a replacement engine.
My GMC Sierra is a 2019 or 2020. Is it in the recall?
The NHTSA recall lists 2021–2024 models. The lawsuit names 2019–2024 Sierra 1500 trucks, so older trucks are in the case but not in the recall. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What happened to the GMC 8-speed transmission lawsuit?
On June 27, 2025 the Sixth Circuit vacated class certification for roughly 800,000 buyers of 2015–2019 vehicles. GM’s June 30, 2026 quarterly report says the case was remanded and a separate 2020–2022 case has not reached class certification. No settlement.
Can I still get money from the GMC 5.3L oil consumption settlement?
Only if you are already a class member. Most members were paid without a claim form (North Carolina members who received an identification notice had to return it by September 15, 2025); new claims are not possible. Reissued checks had to be cashed by September 24, 2026; uncashed money goes to a second distribution. Details on our GM engine settlement page.
Do I need to sign up to be part of a GMC lawsuit?
No. If a class is certified or a settlement is reached, class members are notified and the notice explains what to do. Signing a lawyer’s retainer is a separate decision, not registration.
What should GMC owners do right now?
Run your VIN for open recalls. Keep every repair order, oil-change record and receipt for engine or transmission work. If a dealer denies a recall or warranty repair, get the denial in writing — GM’s dismissal motion argues no plaintiff was denied repairs.
Who do I contact about the recall?
GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, or NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. GM’s recall number is N252494000.
Separate from this case: were you injured in the last 2 years?
Class-action payouts are fixed amounts through an administrator. A personal injury claim is a different case — and often worth far more. Free estimate, no obligation.
