What the Lawsuit Alleges

700Credit, LLC is the largest provider of credit reports and identity-verification services to roughly 18,000 auto, marine, powersports, and RV dealerships via its 700Dealer.com platform — meaning millions of car buyers' data flowed through it without them ever hearing the name. On October 25, 2025, 700Credit detected suspicious activity in that web application; forensic investigation determined that records containing names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of 5,836,521 people (per its Maine Attorney General filing) had been copied. The first class action was filed on November 24, 2025 and consolidated as In re 700Credit Data Security Litigation. 700Credit denies wrongdoing but agreed to a $17.5 million settlement.

Case Details

U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division. Case No. 2:25-cv-13747 (In re 700Credit Data Security Litigation, Hon. Robert J. White). Settlement administrator: 700Credit Data Incident Settlement Administrator, PO Box 4109, Portland, OR 97208-4109, phone 877-502-7785.

Current Status

The court granted preliminary approval on June 4, 2026, and the official settlement website — 700CreditDataBreachSettlement.com — went live in late July 2026, with notices going out to class members now. Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by September 22, 2026. The final approval hearing is scheduled for October 7, 2026 in Detroit (some earlier reports cite December 15, 2026 — the date was revised). Payments and the settlement's credit monitoring activate only after approval becomes final.

Who Is Affected & Can You Join?

The settlement class covers all living U.S. residents who were sent a notice that their information was involved in the 700Credit data incident (consumer letters started mailing the week of December 15, 2025). If you bought or financed a vehicle and received that letter, you are in the class. Never heard of 700Credit? That is normal — your dealership used it to run your credit check. If you believe you're affected but lost the letter, call the administrator at 877-502-7785.

Is There a Payout?

Two cash options: up to $2,500 for documented, unreimbursed fraud or identity-theft losses (receipts, statements, correspondence required — a personal statement alone doesn't count), or a flat cash payment currently estimated around $50 with no documentation (the final amount rises or falls pro-rata with the number of valid claims). On top of either option, every class member gets two years of free credit monitoring via the activation code on the settlement notice — activatable once approval is final. The $17.5M fund pays attorney fees (up to one third) and administration first.

Case Timeline

  1. 1

    October 25, 2025: Breach discovered

700Credit detects suspicious activity in its 700Dealer.com web application and brings in forensic investigators. Records from roughly May–October 2025 dealer transactions were copied, including Social Security numbers.

  2. 2

    November–December 2025: Lawsuits & notices

The first class action is filed November 24, 2025 in the Eastern District of Michigan. Dealership clients are notified from November 21; consumer letters begin mailing the week of December 15, 2025. Michigan's Attorney General issues a consumer alert citing nearly 6 million people affected.

  3. 3

    June 4, 2026: Preliminary approval

Judge Robert J. White preliminarily approves the $17.5 million settlement covering everyone who was sent a breach notice.

  4. 4

Late July 2026: Settlement site & notices live

700CreditDataBreachSettlement.com launches and settlement notices with credit-monitoring activation codes go out — the reason many people are searching for this settlement right now.

  5. 5

    September 22 → October 7, 2026: Deadlines

Claims must be filed online or postmarked by September 22, 2026 (opt-outs reportedly due September 8). The final approval hearing follows on October 7, 2026; payments arrive only after approval is final and appeals resolve.

Scam & Misinformation Warnings

Whenever a brand lawsuit goes viral, scam sites and bad actors follow. Watch for these red flags:

Only file at 700CreditDataBreachSettlement.com

The official settlement portal and the mailed claim form are the only legitimate ways to claim. Sites charging a fee to "file your 700Credit claim" or asking for your full SSN and bank login are scams.

SSNs were exposed — expect targeted phishing

Because Social Security numbers were in the stolen data, treat calls or emails claiming to be your dealership, lender, or "700Credit support" with suspicion. Consider a free credit freeze with all three bureaus — it costs nothing and blocks new-account fraud.

Nobody legitimate calls about your payout

The administrator will not phone you to "release" your payment or verify your identity with bank credentials. Status questions go to 877-502-7785 — you call them, not the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will I get?

Either up to $2,500 with documentation of actual losses, or the flat cash payment (currently estimated around $50) with no documentation — plus two years of free credit monitoring for all class members either way. The flat amount changes pro-rata with how many people file.

I never heard of 700Credit — why did I get a letter?

700Credit runs credit checks for about 18,000 vehicle dealerships. If you bought, leased, or financed a car (or boat, RV, powersports vehicle), the dealership likely ran your application through 700Credit — which is how your Social Security number ended up in their systems.

What happened to the original 12 months of credit monitoring?

700Credit's breach letters (December 2025) offered 12 months of Cyberscout/TransUnion monitoring with a 90-day enrollment window, which has passed for most recipients. The settlement's separate two-year monitoring is the current benefit — use the activation code on your settlement notice once approval is final.

When is the money paid?

After the October 7, 2026 final approval hearing, and only once approval is final and any appeals are resolved — realistically late 2026 into 2027.

Do I need my original breach letter to file?

It helps (notices carry your ID), but if you lost it, contact the administrator at 877-502-7785 or via 700CreditDataBreachSettlement.com to confirm class membership before the September 22, 2026 deadline.
