Paraquat Lawsuit: Parkinson's Disease Claims Against Syngenta & Chevron

More than 6,600 plaintiffs allege exposure to the herbicide paraquat caused Parkinson's disease. A master settlement was signed in August 2025 and a settlement fund was court-approved in March 2026 — but the total amount remains confidential and no payments have been publicly confirmed.

What the Lawsuit Alleges

Plaintiffs — primarily farmers, farmworkers, and agricultural workers — allege that Syngenta AG and Chevron U.S.A. knew for decades that paraquat (sold as Gramoxone) was linked to Parkinson's disease through oxidative damage to dopamine-producing neurons, yet failed to adequately warn users. Studies have associated paraquat exposure with a significantly elevated risk of Parkinson's. Paraquat remains legal in the U.S. but is banned in more than 70 countries.

Case Details

MDL 3004, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, Chief Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel.

Current Status

As of mid-2026, MDL 3004 holds roughly 6,651 active cases. A master settlement agreement was signed by Syngenta and Chevron in August 2025. In March 2026, the court approved a Qualified Settlement Fund (QSF) to distribute proceeds, and a previously scheduled April 2026 trial was canceled. The global settlement amount has not been publicly disclosed, and opt-in/opt-out processes are ongoing. New claims are still being accepted.

Who Is Affected & Can You Join?

Potential claimants generally must show: (1) documented exposure to paraquat — typically through mixing, spraying, or working in treated fields — and (2) a neurologist-confirmed diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Occupational exposure (farmers, farmworkers, ranch hands, applicators) is the most common qualifying category; people who lived near regularly sprayed fields may also qualify. A single or brief exposure is unlikely to qualify. Statutes of limitations vary by state, so consult an attorney promptly.

Is There a Payout?

No global settlement amount has been publicly announced — terms are confidential. The first bellwether case (Philadelphia, January 2026) settled confidentially before trial, setting no public precedent. Attorney estimates for individual cases vary widely (from under $100,000 to over $1 million) depending on severity, exposure, and documentation — these are projections, not guarantees. No settlement payments have been publicly confirmed as distributed. Anyone who has not filed should consult an attorney promptly.

Case Timeline

  1. 1

2021 — MDL Created; Early Settlement

The federal panel consolidated paraquat Parkinson's cases into MDL 3004 in the Southern District of Illinois. Syngenta separately resolved a group of early cases in a $187.5 million agreement.

  2. 2

April 2025 — Letter Agreement Signed

Syngenta and Chevron signed a letter of intent to resolve many remaining MDL cases, the first concrete step toward a global settlement.

  3. 3

August 2025 — Master Settlement Agreement Executed

The parties executed a formal master settlement agreement; existing plaintiffs began deciding whether to opt in or out. The total amount was not publicly disclosed.

  4. 4

    January 29, 2026 — First Bellwether Settles

The first Philadelphia-venue paraquat Parkinson's case reached a confidential settlement just before trial, avoiding a public jury verdict.

  5. 5

March 2026 — Settlement Fund Approved; Trial Canceled

The court approved a Qualified Settlement Fund and an April 2026 trial was canceled. Vermont became the first U.S. state to ban paraquat (May 2026), and Syngenta announced it would cease global production by June 2026.

Scam & Misinformation Warnings

Whenever a brand lawsuit goes viral, scam sites and bad actors follow. Watch for these red flags:

Unsolicited Calls Promising a Guaranteed Check

No global settlement amount has been announced and no distribution to plaintiffs has been confirmed. Any caller, mailer, or website claiming you are already owed a specific amount — or can receive a check without filing — is misrepresenting the litigation. Legitimate attorneys never guarantee outcomes or quote amounts before reviewing your records.

Case-Runner 'Sign Now' Pressure Tactics

High-pressure solicitations urging you to sign a retainer immediately — particularly from non-attorney 'case managers' or lead-generation services — are a red flag. Always verify you are dealing with a licensed attorney before signing anything.

Inflated Settlement-Estimate Marketing

Many law-firm ads cite projected ranges of $600,000–$900,000 or higher. These are speculative estimates based on comparable mass torts — not offers or guarantees. The actual settlement terms are confidential. Be skeptical of any source presenting estimates as confirmed payouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the paraquat lawsuit still accepting new claims in 2026?

Yes. As of mid-2026, attorneys are still accepting new paraquat claims. The MDL remains open and the master settlement has an opt-in process. However, statutes of limitations vary by state and can cut off eligibility, so consult an attorney promptly rather than waiting.

Has a global paraquat settlement been finalized and paid out?

A master settlement was signed in August 2025 and a Qualified Settlement Fund was court-approved in March 2026. However, the total amount is confidential and no distributions to plaintiffs have been publicly confirmed as of mid-2026. The settlement is in process, but payments have not been announced.

Who are the defendants in the paraquat lawsuit?

The primary defendants are Syngenta AG, which has manufactured and sold paraquat (brand name Gramoxone) for decades, and Chevron U.S.A., the primary U.S. distributor for many years. Both are parties to the master settlement reached in 2025.

What level of paraquat exposure qualifies for a claim?

There is no universal legal threshold, but accepted claims typically involve repeated occupational exposure — regularly mixing, loading, or applying paraquat as a farmer or agricultural worker, or working in sprayed fields. A single incidental exposure is generally too limited. A neurologist-confirmed Parkinson's diagnosis is also required.

Is paraquat still legal in the United States?

Yes, as of mid-2026 paraquat remains federally legal for restricted use by licensed applicators. Vermont became the first state to ban it in May 2026, and other states have introduced ban legislation. It is banned in more than 70 countries, including all EU member states since 2007.
